Jane Gardam
Jane Mary Gardam, OBE , FRSL , (born Jean Mary Pearson July 11, 1928 in Coatham , North Yorkshire ) is an English writer . She writes short stories , novels and children's books . She writes reviews for The Spectator and The Telegraph and writes for BBC Radio .
life and work
Jane Gardam attended the Saltburn High School for Girls before a scholarship at Bedford College of the University of London studying English. After graduation, she worked as a traveling librarian for Red Cross hospital libraries in 1951 . In 1952 she started editing for the Weldon Ladies Journal and Time and Tide . She published her first book at the age of 43, after her third child started school.
She has received numerous literary prizes for her work. Her first book of stories for adults, Black Faces, White Faces , which appeared in 1975, received the David Higham Prize for Fiction and the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize . Her first novel God on the Rocks was awarded the French Prix Baudelaire . The novel was also adapted for television. In 2016 it was celebrated in Germany as “the literary discovery of the season”.
In 2009 she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire . Gardam is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in Sandwich , East Kent.
