Nguyễn Công Phượng (born January 21, 1995 in Do Luong , Nghệ An ) is a Vietnamese football player on the position of the center forward. He is currently playing on loan with the Vietnamese club Ho Chi Minh City FC . Because of his style of play and stature, he is sometimes referred to by fans and the media as the "Vietnamese Messi ".
Career

Nguyễn Công Phượng's talent was recognized from an early age. At the age of 12 he joined the Hoang Anh Gia Lai - Arsenal JMG Academy , the youth academy run by Hoàng Anh Gia Lai in cooperation with Arsenal FC . In 2015 he was promoted to the first team. In January 2015 he made his debut in the Vietnamese first division . After the season he was loaned to Japan. Further years in Vietnam followed a loan to South Korea in 2019. Since summer 2019 he has also been playing on loan in the Belgian first division for VV St. Truiden . Due to differing opinions about his skill level, the loan ended on December 31, 2019.
On January 1, 2020, a new loan was made to the Vietnamese club Hồ Chí Minh City FC until the end of the season .
National team
Nguyễn Công Phượng played for the Vietnamese U-20 and U-23 national teams . With the latter, he took part in the 2018 Asian Cup in China and came in second after losing to Uzbekistan in the final . When football tournament of the 2018 Asian Games , he was with Vietnam fourth.
On October 8, 2015, he made his debut for the Vietnamese national team in a 1-1 draw against Iraq in World Cup qualification . He scored his first international goal in a 3-2 win in the friendly against Indonesia on November 8, 2016. In 2018, he won the Southeast Asian Championship with Vietnam . In the tournament, Nguyễn Công Phượng came to seven appearances and scored three goals. At the 2019 Asian Cup , he scored two goals in five appearances for Vietnam. He was eliminated with his team after a 1-0 loss to Japan in the quarterfinals.
