Nghệ An is the largest province in the northern coastal region of Vietnam .
history
In 1930 the Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets were founded in Nghệ An and the neighboring province of Hà Tĩnh .
Administrative division
The province is divided into the provincial cities ( thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh ) Vinh (capital), Thái Hòa , Hoàng Mai and Cửa Lò as well as 17 districts ( huyện ):

There are two universities in Nghệ An, both in Vinh City. The largest is the University of Vinh.

According to the population statistics from 2009, Nghệ An had 2,912,041 inhabitants, of which 374,797 (12.9%) lived in cities. 972,959 (33.4%) were younger than 18 years, 287,154 (9.9%) 60 years and older.
2,489,952 residents (85.5%) were ethnic Vietnamese (Kinh) , 295,132 (10.1%) were assigned to the Thái nationality, 59,579 (2.0%) to the ethnic group of the Thổ , 35,670 (1.2%) the Khmu , 28,992 (1.0%) the Hmong .

Phan Bội Châu and Hồ Chí Minh were born in the province.
