Hà Giang is a province ( tỉnh ) of Vietnam . It is located in the far north of the country; Vietnam's northernmost point is also in the province of Hà Giang.
The center and administrative seat of the province is the city of Hà Giang . In addition to the independent provincial capital, the province is divided into ten districts ( huyện ): Bắc Mê, Bắc Quang, Đồng Văn , Hoàng Su Phì, Mèo Vạc , Quản Bạ, Quảng Bình, Vị Xuyên, Xín Mần, Yên Minh.
Hà Giang is a very mountainous region and traveling within the province can be difficult, especially during the rainy season. Large parts of the territory are unsuitable for agricultural use, which is why a lot of the land is forested. Nevertheless, corn and dry rice are still being grown from the karst soils at high altitudes. Plums, peaches and persimmons are grown and exported on the plateau in which the town of Hà Giang is located .
Hà Giang is one of the poorest provinces in Vietnam. Traditionally, the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and forestry, but production companies have also been established in recent years. The infrastructure, even if it has been greatly improved in recent years, is still very thin; Roads, hospitals and schools are still underdeveloped compared to other parts of Vietnam.
Since the villages are hours' walk apart and often only consist of a few houses, the teachers wander to the children to enable them to go to school.
Many national minorities live in Hà Giang. Besides the Viet there are Tay , Dao and Hmong .
The small local markets north of Hà Giang are supplied by China - with the exception of rice, meat, vegetables and low-quality alcohol. Many of the traditional costumes for sale at Dong Van or Meo Vac's Sunday markets come from factories across the border and are made from cheap synthetic fabrics.
Tourist travel in these northern areas requires an official permit. This can be obtained from the local police authorities or hotels in Hà Giang. It must be possible to prove overnight stays during controls (stamp on the document).
