Bắc Giang is a province ( tỉnh ) of Vietnam . It is located in the northeast region of the country. The provincial capital is also called Bắc Giang and is located about 50 kilometers east of Hanoi . The present province was founded in 1895. The name comes from the Sino-Vietnamese 北江 and means “north of the river”.
The province is located north of the Red River Delta and is bordered by the provinces of Quảng Ninh in the east, Lạng Sơn in the north and Thái Nguyên and the municipality of Hanoi's Sóc Sơn in the west; the southern border is formed by Bắc Ninh and Hải Dương .
Districts
Bắc Giang is divided into ten districts:
- 9 districts ( huyện ): Hiệp Hòa, Lạng Giang, Lục Nam, Lục Ngạn, Sơn Động, Tân Yên, Việt Yên, Yên Dũng and Yên Thế
- 1 provincial town ( Thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh ): Bắc Giang (capital)
These are again divided into 16 small towns (urban communities), 207 rural communities and 7 urban districts.
