Bắc Giang is a city in northern Vietnam and the capital of the Bắc Giang province of the same name . The name comes from Sino-Vietnamese and means "north of the river". The city is well connected and is located 50 km north of Hanoi . It is located in the middle of the important trade routes that connect Hanoi with the cities of Lạng Sơn and Đồng Đăng (border with China ). In the southern part of the city is the Thương River, which flows towards Haiphong .
Although the name of the province of Bắc Giang (北江 "north of the river") is very old and was established in this form as early as 1466, there is no historical evidence of a city with this name at this time. Bắc Giang emerged from the old Láng Thượng district after independence. The Suối Mỡ hot springs are located 37 km from the city center.
