About this picture

Lai Châu is a province of Vietnam . It is located in the northwest of the country in the northwest region . The province borders on the People's Republic of China . The capital of the province is Lai Châu .

Districts

Lai Châu is divided into 5 districts:

  • Mường Tè
  • Phong Thổ
  • Sìn Hồ
  • Tam Đường
  • Than Uyên

The provincial capital Lai Chau is a separate municipality.

Relocation of the provincial capital

The main town of Lai Châu has only been in its current location since 2004/05: Since the old capital Lai Châu was largely flooded by the damming of the Black River , the government decided to relocate the provincial administration, combined with an extensive renaming of the place: the new capital was Tam Đường , which was spun off from the district of the same name and was given the name Lai Châu . The previous Lai Châu was named after the next largest place in the area as Mường Lay . The previous Mường Lay was then given the new name Mường Chà . The previous Bình Lư became the new Tam Đường .

Since the western and southern parts of the province were split off as the new province of ĐiĐn Biên at the same time , the old provincial capital is no longer in the province of Lai Châu.
