About this picture

Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu is a province ( tỉnh ) on the south coast of Vietnam and one of the country's economic centers.

Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu is divided into eight districts:

  • 6 counties ( huyện ): Châu Đức, Đất Đỏ, Long Điền, Tân Thành and Xuyên Mộc on the mainland, as well as the Côn Đảo archipelago in the South China Sea
  • 2 provincial cities ( thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh ): Vũng Tàu and Bà Rịa (capital)

The province has existed since 1979, when it was formed from parts of surrounding provinces. In 1992 the area around the city of Bà Rịa was added to it. It was at this point that it was given its current name.

In 2012, the provincial administration was officially transferred from Vũng Tàu to Bà Rịa, which was subsequently elevated to a provincial town.

economy

Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu is one of the wealthiest and most economically active provinces in Vietnam. In 2005 around 24% of the state's income was generated here, only Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have an even larger share.

The area is a center of petrochemicals , but steel and cement are also produced and processed in large quantities. The largest power plant in Vietnam as of 2014, the Phú Mỹ power plant , is located in Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu and covers around 40% of Vietnam's electrical energy requirements.

The gross domestic product per capita is US $ 4,000, without income from chemicals it is still US $ 2,000, which is the highest value in Vietnam. At US $ 1,850, Ho Chi Minh City ranks well behind in second place.
