Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets ( vietn. Xô Vi Nt Nghĩ-Tĩnh ) are a workers 'and peasants' movement that took place in the Vietnamese provinces of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh from 1930 to 1931.

The uprising began on May 1, 1930 with demonstrations by workers in the industrial area of Bến Thủy and by farmers in the city of Vinh . By August 1930 there had been a total of 97 demonstrations and strikes, including a long-term workers' strike at the B vonn Thủy match factory.

From September 1930, there were large-scale armed protests in the districts of Nam Đàn, Thanh Chương, Can Lộc and Hưng Nguyên, in the course of which both the French colonial administration and the local Vietnamese feudal lords were largely paralyzed.

In many communities, farmers' councils were founded based on the Soviet model. They carried out land reforms and confiscated the property of the large landowners.

However, these local councils only existed for four to five months before they were forcibly crushed by the French colonial authorities.

The Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets are considered to be the beginning of the socialist movement in Vietnam.
