Heinz Präßler

Heinz Präßler (born April 13, 1923 in Hermsdorf (Thuringia) , † February 18, 1998 in Cottbus ) was a German architect and university professor in the GDR . For many years he was the rector of the Cottbus Engineering College .

Life

Präßler, son of the master builder Walter Präßler, learned the profession of bricklayer in his father's company after attending secondary school and graduated from the Erfurt State Building School . During the Second World War he did military service and was briefly captured.

After the war he worked from 1945 to 1950 as a site manager and architect in the family company. From 1950 he worked as an employee of the German Building Academy (DBA) in East Berlin . He joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), was personal advisor to the President of the DBA Kurt Liebknecht and first secretary of the Works Party Organization (BPO) of the DBA.

In 1958 he was promoted to Dr.-Ing. doctorate and was director of the Institute for Housing and Social Construction of the DBA from 1959 to 1962. From 1962 to 1963 he was the district building director for the Cottbus district . In November 1963, the Berlin magistrate appointed him deputy mayor and city councilor for construction and investment. In February 1966 he was appointed director of the scientific and technical center at the Ministry of Construction . When the engineering college in Cottbus was founded in 1969, he became professor and rector of the college for construction and remained in office until his retirement in 1988. As the longest serving rector of the GDR, he was replaced by Horst Brix on February 26, 1988 after more than 18 years.

From May 1971 to March 1976 and again from February 1981 to 1989 he was a member of the SED district leadership in Cottbus. As the successor to Joachim Schulze, Präßler was chairman of the Cottbus district board of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship (DSF) from May 1972 to 1989 .

Präßler died at the age of 74. His urn grave is in the south cemetery (Cottbus) .
