1. Form

The silver-plated medal with a diameter of 34 mm shows a hammer, a compass and three ears of wheat in the center of its obverse on a kind of medallion. Two ears of corn flanked the hammer and the compass, the third was mostly hidden behind the hammer. The medallion was enclosed by a small ring, which was enclosed at the bottom by the inscription: HERO OF WORK and at the top by two curved laurel branches that were open at the top, which also formed the edge of the medal. The reverse , on the other hand, showed the dove of peace in the middle and the inscription: GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC . The medal was worn on a 30 mm wide white ribbon. On this 5 mm from the edge, one (so a total of two) a 5 mm wide black-red-gold central stripe was woven into each side edge. With regard to the wearing instructions, there were several versions, one on a long strap or on a rectangular clasp.

2. shape

In 1952 the layout of the medal was fundamentally changed and the medal shape was discarded. In its place was a gold-plated star measuring 34 mm × 34 mm, which showed a medallion (23 mm diameter) with a laurel wreath in its center. Inside the wreath there is a hammer and a compass as well as two ears of corn flanking it. The reverse of the star was inscribed in the form of an open circle: HELD DER ARBEIT and until 1972 the hallmark 900 on the upper edge and the manufacturer MB (Berlin Mint) below . The star was worn on a 31.5 mm wide and 10 mm high golden clasp with a red band on the upper left side of the chest. When the title was awarded several times, which was basically possible, the second clasp was worn next to the first on a kind of connecting groove.
