Collin "Chippa" Benjamin (born August 3, 1978 in Windhoek , South West Africa , today Namibia ) is a former Namibian soccer player and today's coach . He could be used as an all-rounder both as a full-back and in defensive or right midfield. In the Namibian national team , which he led as captain , he often played as a striker . Since August 2018 he has been the second assistant coach of the Namibian national soccer team.

Career

Player career

He started his career in Namibia with Civics FC Windhoek . In 1999 he moved to Germany, where he played from July 1999 to December 1999 for the Hamburg club Germania Schnelsen and from January 2000 to December 2000 with Raspo Elmshorn .

Benjamin was part of the professional squad of Hamburger SV from July 2001 to the end of May 2011 , which made him the longest-serving player on the team. At the end of the 2010/11 season , his contract was not renewed.

At the beginning of June 2011 he moved to the second division TSV 1860 Munich on a free transfer . There he signed a contract until June 30, 2012, which included an option for an extension of one year. On July 17, 2011 Benjamin was under coach Reiner Maurer in the game against Eintracht Braunschweig for the first time for 1860 on the field. He did not extend his contract with the Munich team, which expired at the end of the season, and ended his career.

Coaching career

In the spring of 2013 Benjamin returned to TSV 1860 and completed an internship as a coach in the club's junior performance center. In the 2013/14 season he was primarily responsible for the U-13s. At the same time, he completed his trainer license. For the 2014/15 season, Benjamin was assistant coach to Torsten Fröhling in the second team. After Markus von Ahlen was dismissed and Fröhling was subsequently promoted to head coach of the second division representation of TSV 1860, Benjamin became assistant coach for the TSV professionals. In January 2016 he terminated his contract with TSV 1860 for private reasons. Since the end of August 2018 he has been the second assistant coach of the Namibian national team.

successes

Benjamin won the UI Cup with HSV in 2005 and 2007 . In the CL qualifier against CA Osasuna on August 22, 2006, he prepared the decisive 1-1 through Nigel de Jong . In 2008 he took part in the African Championship in Ghana with the Namibian national team.

Special

He had himself reamateurised for a year in 2006 so that Aílton could find a non-EU foreigner place at HSV .

Private life

For several years, Collin Benjamin founded and maintained the Namibia-based "Collin Benjamin Soccer Academy", which had set itself the task of promoting Namibian football youth. Tura Magic , a Namibian second division club, emerged from the sports school .

Since 2016 he wants to set up a new soccer training center in Windhoek to promote young players: In a press report he also told his story: “I remember when the Brave Warriors lost 4-0 to Zambia in 1992. In the republic I read about the game and there some Zambian players were called "Beroepspelers". When my mother asked what this meant, she explained to me that they were professional players who played football to make a living. I couldn't believe they were getting paid to play football at first, but then decided to do the same. That was my vision and I started to follow this path. ”In December 2016 he was awarded the Khomasdal Stadium for 30 years for the“ First Football School of Windhoek ” .

Benjamin is married and has a daughter and a son. He has been living permanently in Namibia's capital Windhoek since 2016.
