The gymnastics and sports club Germania Schnelsen from 1921 eV is a multi-discipline club from the Hamburg district of Schnelsen . He became known nationwide through the table tennis department, whose first men's team played in the 1st Bundesliga from 1987 to 1990 . There are also departments for aikido , badminton , fistball , soccer , judo , athletics , volleyball, as well as gymnastics and gymnastics .

Beginnings

Germania Schnelsen has only existed in its current form since May 17, 1945, when two predecessor associations merged. The older and eponymous of the two clubs was the game and sports club Germania from 1921 Schnelsen .

But this foundation was not the first attempt to do sports in the then Holstein village of Schnelsen. 1912 was Schnelsener football club from 1912 was established and in 1916, in the First World War it was minded patriotic, in club football Germania Schnelsen renamed. This club never took part in the organized game operations of a football association and only played against other so-called wild clubs. Towards the end of the war, the club disbanded and they had other concerns. But already after a short time the desire for sporting activity returned and so former players founded the above-mentioned SuS Germania 1921 Schnelsen on October 18, 1921, which then also took part in the game operation. Seven years later, on July 19, 1928, with the Turnverein Schnelsen from 1928 , a member club of the German Gymnastics Association was founded. An unusual order, as in the country - and Schnelsen was a flat country far outside the gates of Hamburg at the time - the gymnastics clubs are mostly older than the sports clubs.

For almost 20 years, Schnelsen had two clubs in which one could indulge in physical activity. After the Second World War , however, the need was so great and the number of active people so small that even groups that were once rather negative towards each other, such as gymnasts and athletes, now merged, so that the above-mentioned merger came about.

Table tennis

Germania Schnelsen has had a table tennis department since the 1950s . Their first men's team played since the 1960s mainly in the Hamburg League , the highest Hamburg division. Initially, however, it was not enough for the ascent.

In 1982 it was promoted to the second division for the first time, but in 1985 the team was relegated to the Oberliga Nord . There, Jochen Leiß, a former German champion, and Colum Slevin, the then reigning Irish champion, were hired , and so the Schnelseners succeeded in their immediate resurgence. For the 1986/87 season, the German-Swede Günter Kuschmierz and two youngsters from the youth department, Jens Stolte and Oliver Alke , were added to these two . The reinforcements meant that the 2nd Bundesliga North was dominated by only two teams, promoted Germania and VfB Lübeck , where prominent figures were also under contract with ex-world champion Liang Geliang and ex-European champion Jaroslav Kunz . The schedule stipulated that both teams only met each other on the last match day. The first leg in Lübeck ended in a 8-8 draw. Since both teams won all of their other games, the second leg had to decide, which was played in front of 2,400 spectators in the sold-out sports hall in Wandsbek . With a 9: 6 success, the Schnelsener reached the promotion round to the 1st Bundesliga, in which they could safely prevail with 5: 1 points. With the engagement of Wang Yansheng , who was still completely unknown in Europe at the time, the team achieved the necessary strength to hold their own in the table tennis Bundesliga . The team's coach was the Swede Christer Johansson , a former national coach. Overall, the team was able to play in the Bundesliga for three years before being relegated again in 1990, when Wang had moved to VfB Lübeck before the season. The highlight was the third place in 1989, when a victory against record champions Borussia Düsseldorf was achieved. In this game, Wang and Kuschmierz were able to defeat the newly crowned world champions in men's doubles, Jörg Roßkopf and Steffen Fetzner .

For financial reasons, the club decided not to start in the Second Bundesliga after relegation and withdrew to the Hamburg League. In the 2019/20 season, the only women’s team will play in the Regionalliga Nord, while the first men’s team (of six) will play in the Oberliga Nord. Germania takes part in the youth games with a total of eleven teams (three girls, two boys and six school teams).

Known players if not mentioned in the article: He Zhiwen (1989), Matthias Höring (from 1988), Huang Jianguo (1987), Lin Yong Jiang (1989), Claus Mattern (until 1989), Manfred Nieswand (1988), Peter Noha ( 1989), Shen Hua Song (1989).

Soccer

Football is the traditional sport at Germania Schnelsen, after all the club was founded by footballers. From the 1945/46 season, Germania played in the third-highest league (A-class Hamburg, from 1947 1st class, from 1949 district class and from 1953 called association league), which was divided into three seasons ("Hansa", "Hammonia" and "Germania “- the Schnelsener were divided into the latter). In 1962 she was promoted to the second-rate Hamburg amateur league, but had to leave it in 1963 when she was third from bottom.

Even after the introduction of the Bundesliga, it was never enough to win supra-regional honors , the meanwhile only fifth-rate Hamburg's highest league was always the end of the line. In 1999, the future HSV professional Collin Benjamin played for Germania for half a year. In 2007, the first men's team from the Hamburg league was relegated to the state league. In the 2009/10 season, Germania won the championship unbeaten in the Landesliga Hammonia and has played again in the top division of Hamburg since the 2010/11 season, in which Stefan Schnoor played. Four years later, the team was relegated to the regional league and, in 2017, to the district league. During the winter break of the 2018/19 season, the 1st men's team was withdrawn from the Bezirksliga West game operations in order to start a new start for the following season.

athletics

The focus of the athletics department in recent years has been long-distance running and ultra-long-distance running. In 2010 and 2011 the marathon runner Manuela Sporleder was the only one in the DLV best list for the adult class. The ultramarathon runner Thomas Hansen was in the 100-kilometer run of 7:02:54 h in 1997 and was among the top 50 runners in Germany's all-time best list at the end of 2010.
