Liang Geliang

Liang Geliang - also Liang Ko-liang - (born May 5, 1950 in Guangxi Province ) is a Chinese table tennis player . In the 1970s, he was world champion six times and vice world champion three times.

Style of play

Liang Geliang started playing table tennis when he was ten. He used the club in the penholder grip, later he switched to shakehand . He is an all-round player who can play both defense and attack. As a tireless "material tinkerer" he sometimes changed his racket surface during a tournament by separating the top layer from the backing and re-gluing it under tension or gluing on a new top layer (often even a used top layer that was found to be particularly good in the past).

World championships

Liang Geliang was nominated for the 1971 , 1973 , 1975 , 1977 and 1979 World Championships . He won the title six times: 1971, 1975, 1977 with the Chinese team, 1973 in mixed with Li Li, 1977 in doubles with Li Zhenshi and 1979 in mixed with Ge Xinai . He was vice world champion in 1971 in doubles with Chuang Tse-Tung and in 1993 and 1979 with the team. He won bronze in singles in 1977 and 1979. He was also third in 1975 in mixed with Zhang Li and 1979 in doubles with Guo Yuehua .

Germany

In 1980 Liang Geliang came to Germany for the first time. He played in early 1981 for VfB Lübeck in the association league, then in the 1981/82 season for VfB Plaza Altena . At the same time he worked as an association trainer in Hamburg and competed in some exhibition fights. In 1982 he returned to China and trained as a coach at Beijing University.

In 1985 he moved with his family again to Lübeck and worked at VfB Lübeck as a player-coach in the second Bundesliga, in 1987 he also coached the Spvg Steinhagen club . About the stations DJK Kleinwallstadt, TSV Milbertshofen (from 1993) and SV Adelsried he came in 2000 to the club SV Blau-Weiß Petershagen in the Oberliga Berlin-Brandenburg.

Several times he was successful at senior world championships : In the age group over 40 he won gold in singles in 1990, 1992 and 1994 as well as in doubles in 1990 (with Jaroslav Kunz ), 1992 (with Heiner Lammers ) and 1994 (with Herbert Neubauer ). In 2000 and 2002, he won the individual title in the 50+ class. In 2010 he won the over 60s doubles with Wilfried Lieck .

Private

Liang Geliang is married to his wife Lijun Ma and has a daughter named Liang Chen (* 1979), who played in the 2nd table tennis league for Rot-Weiß Klettham-Erding from 1994 to 1997 . After training and working as a retail saleswoman, she stayed with her parents in China from 2008 to 2009.
