Zhang Li (table tennis player)
Zhang Li , also Chang Li , ( Chinese 张立 , Pinyin Zhāng Lì ; born May 3, 1951 in Shandong , People's Republic of China ; † February 13, 2019 ) was a Chinese table tennis player . In the 1970s she won four world championships.
Career
In the 1970s, Zhang Li took part in all five world championships . She won the title with the Chinese women's team in 1975 , 1977 and 1979 . In 1979 she was also world champion in doubles with Zhang Deying . There are also three silver medals, namely in 1975 and 1977 in the individual, where she was defeated in the final by the North Korean Pak Yung-sun (on instructions she had to deliberately lose the final for political reasons), and in 1973 with the team. She won bronze in singles in 1973, mixed with Liang Geliang in 1975 and doubles with Ge Xinai in 1977 .
She was also successful several times at the Asian Championships . Here she won the title in 1974 in doubles with Zheng Huaiying, in 1976 in singles and in 1978 with the team. She failed three times in the final and twice in the semi-finals.
In the ITTF world rankings , Zhang Li was second from December 1974 to January 1979.
After the end of her active career, Zhang Li worked as a trainer, for example for Gao Jun .

Zhang Li was married to multiple world champion Li Zhenshi . With him she has the daughter Li Nan , who is also one of the world's best.

Zhang Li died on February 13, 2019 at 12:21 p.m. in California of complications from lung cancer, which she was diagnosed with in September 2015. Although Li did not smoke and eat healthily, she developed lung cancer from a genetic mutation.
