Fuji Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fuji Cup was an unofficial preparatory tournament that took place from 1986 to 1996 during the summer break immediately before the start of the Bundesliga season in smaller cities in the “soccer province” (played in 1986 as the Casio Cup). In the competition, which consisted of two semi-finals, followed by a game for third place and a final, top teams from the previous Bundesliga season took part.

Also before the start of the new Bundesliga season, the official DFB Supercup between the German champions and the DFB Cup winners of the previous season was held. Since the Fuji Cup advanced into a dimension that the official Supercup of the DFB had not yet reached, the DFB first introduced a clause that stipulated that cup winners and champions would not be invited to the Fuji Cup tournament at the same time in order to avoid a premature Supercup game.

For the 1997 season, the two competitions were finally replaced by the newly created and official DFB League Cup , which was held until 2007. A similar tournament has been held since 2009, the likewise unofficial Telekom Cup (2009 as T-Home Cup , 2010–2012 as LIGA total! Cup ).

The record winner is FC Bayern Munich with a total of five wins in the Casio Cup and Fuji Cup.
