Kaan Ayhan (born November 10, 1994 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a Turkish-German soccer player . The right-footer is primarily used as a central defender, but can also play in defensive midfield and in the full-back positions. He is under contract with US Sassuolo in Italy and also plays for the Turkish national team .

Private

Kaan Ayhan's father, Erol Ayhan, is from Iğdır and his mother, Nesrin Ayhan, is from Maçka . He is also the nephew of the Turkish footballer Saffet Kaya (* 1981), who was born in Recklinghausen and came from the youth department of Borussia Dortmund and was under contract for Galatasaray Istanbul and Antalyaspor , among others .

Club career

FC Schalke 04

Ayhan, who was born in Gelsenkirchen, started playing football for a club in 1999. His first club was the Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04. He went through all of Schalke's youth departments. For the B youth he played 39 games, scored 15 goals and prepared nine more goals. In the A-youth he repeated a similar performance. In 2012 he became German champion with the Schalke A-Jugend .

On January 18, 2012, Ayhan signed a professional contract with Schalke from July 2013, which is valid until 2015. During the winter break of 2012/13 he took part in the FC Schalke winter training camp in Qatar . For the 2013/14 season he finally moved up to the professional squad. He made his Bundesliga debut on October 5, 2013 in the home game against FC Augsburg , when he came on for Ádám Szalai in the 85th minute . On November 4, 2013, his contract was extended to 2017. Due to the personnel situation with many injuries, Ayhan moved into the starting line-up for several games in the second half of the season and impressed with good performances. He played most of the games as a central defender and made his debut in the UEFA Champions League in the second leg of the second leg against Real Madrid in the defensive midfield position. On the penultimate game day he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-0 away win against SC Freiburg . Against Freiburg he ran as a left full-back. He finished the season with his team in third place in the table, which means direct qualification for the Champions League 2014/15 .

In the 2014/15 season he started as a right full-back in the first two league games, then moved to central defense. He made a total of 12 appearances in the first half of the Bundesliga, including three short appearances. In the Champions League , he played four out of six group games and was able to qualify with his team for the round of 16. There they were eliminated again against Real Madrid. While he was still a regular under Jens Keller in some cases, he was rarely part of the squad under Roberto Di Matteo . Ayhan suffered a capsule injury in April 2015 and was out for the remainder of the season. André Breitenreiter followed Di Matteo, who was released after the season . Under Breitenreiter, Ayhan only made a brief appearance on the 4th matchday in the entire first half of the 2015/16 Bundesliga . In the UEFA Europa League , Ayhan played four of six possible group games and set up a goal in the game against Sparta Prague .

Eintracht Frankfurt

After Ayhan only played once for Schalke in the first half of the 2015/16 season , he was awarded to league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the season. He made his debut for Eintracht on February 6, 2016, on matchday 20, in the 2: 4 defeat against VfB Stuttgart . When the score was 0: 2, he was substituted for Änis Ben-Hatira at the beginning of the second half . On April 9, 2016, the 29th matchday of the Bundesliga, he played his second competitive game for the Frankfurt team in the 2-0 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

Fortuna Dusseldorf

For the 2016/17 season , Ayhan initially returned to FC Schalke 04. On August 31, 2016, his move to Fortuna Düsseldorf was announced, and on May 30, 2018, the contract was prematurely extended to 2021. There he soon developed into a regular player in the second division. In the 2017/18 season he was a regular defender and only missed three league games due to a yellow card suspension and two yellow card suspensions. At the end of the season he was promoted to the First Bundesliga with Düsseldorf. He played there regularly, too, but after the 10th match day he was initially removed from the starting line-up and then from the squad due to a weakness in form. The defender did not take the step and instead switched to the Italian Serie A for US Sassuolo in the 2020/21 season .

National team

Germany

Ayhan played two international matches for the Turkish U17 national team in autumn 2009 and then decided to play for the German junior national teams. From May 3rd to 15th, 2011 he took part in the U17 European Championship in Serbia and reached the final with his team. In the semifinals against the Juniors of Denmark he scored his only tournament goal. He then took part in the 2011 U17 World Cup in Mexico from June 18 to July 10 as a right full-back and was used seven times. He scored his first tournament goal in the win against England.

Turkey

In October 2013 Ayhan was appointed to the squad of the Turkish U21 national team. On October 11, 2013 he came there for his first use in the European Championship qualifier against Greece on the starting grid.

After he had been able to convince with his club for a long time, he was nominated for the first time in his career in the squad of the Turkish national team by national coach Fatih Terim in October 2014 as part of two qualifying matches for the European Championship 2016 . Due to an injury, he was unloaded again. On August 31, 2016, he made his debut for the Turkish national team in a friendly against Russia when he was substituted on in the 46th minute.

Ayhan can play in multiple positions.
