societies

The son of a Croat and an Afro-American got into the youth of the Stuttgarter Kickers through SV Grün-Weiss Sommerrain and TSV Steinhaldenfeld, both in the east of Stuttgart . From there he later went to the youth team at VfB Stuttgart . In 2011 he moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

During the 2012/13 season, Toljan moved into the Bundesliga squad of the Hoffenheim team and was in the squad on the next match day. He made his debut in the Bundesliga on the 8th match day of the 2013/14 season in the game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , because the regular defender Fabian Johnson was injured. The next match day was played from the start and, just like against Mainz 05, played 90 minutes. At the same time he was also active in the squad of the second team in the Regionalliga Südwest . In the 2-4 defeat against VfL Wolfsburg on October 17, 2015, the 9th matchday of the 2015/16 Bundesliga season , Toljan scored his first Bundesliga goal with a 2-1 draw.

In August 2017, Toljan moved to Borussia Dortmund , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2022. In his first season, the man from Stuttgart was a regular on both defensive flanks under Peter Stöger and his successor Peter Bosz until his injury-related loss . After Toljan did not play a competitive game under the new BVB coach Lucien Favre in the first half of the 2018/19 season, he was awarded to the Scottish first division club Celtic Glasgow in January 2019 on the last day of the transfer period until the end of the season . The defender made his Premiership debut on February 3, 2019, when he came on for Mikael Lustig in the 46th minute of Celtics' 2-0 win over FC St. Johnstone . Toljan played 14 competitive games for Celtic and won the championship and cup double with the club .

At the beginning of July 2019, Toljan initially returned to Borussia Dortmund with the start of preparation. After a few days of team training, he moved on loan to the Italian first division club US Sassuolo Calcio on July 11 until the end of the 2019/20 season , with whom he was able to earn a regular place on the right defensive flank in autumn. At the end of June 2020, Sassuolo announced that he had extended the loan deal with BVB for another season. After an unknown number of other competitive games, a purchase option added to the contract will take effect, which is said to be worth 5 million euros.

National team

Toljan took part in the European Championship 2012 in Slovenia with the U17 of the DFB and reached the final against the Netherlands there . He then played several international matches in the U19 . From 2013 to 2014 was active for the U20 . On May 26, 2015 he was appointed by national coach Horst Hrubesch to the preliminary squad of the German U21 team for the 2015 European Championships in the Czech Republic . His first international goal was the winning goal to make it 1-0 in the game against the Turkish selection on November 10, 2016 in Berlin .

On July 15, 2016, he was appointed to the DFB squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . He won the silver medal with the team. On November 1, 2016, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf together with the Olympic soccer team . At the U21 European Championship 2017 in Poland, Toljan played the full distance in every game and finally won the title with Germany. With the presentation of the winning goal by Mitchell Weiser in the final against Spain and two other assists in the games against England and Denmark , he played a major role in the tournament victory.
