Career

societies

Junior soccer

Niclas Füllkrug played for nine years up to the age of 14 in the Hanover district of Ricklingen and was partly trained by his father, who was active at Tus Ricklingen. The son developed into one of the most sought-after striker talents in Germany and scored 162 goals in one season in the F-Jugend.

In 2006 he moved to Werder Bremen . So he was initially able to spend half a week at home in Lower Saxony and came to the Hanseatic League for the long weekend before he finally moved to Werder boarding school.

In the club, Füllkrug was successful in the 2009/10 season in the B-youth with 17 goals in 22 games. The following year he scored twelve goals in 17 games of the A-youth and gave six assists. And a year later, at the age of 18, he was in the squad of the second team (U23), which played in the third division . He was used there regularly from the beginning.

SV Werder Bremen

Since the winter preparations in January 2012 in Belek , Füllkrug has been part of the professional roster. He made his Bundesliga debut on January 28, 2012 on matchday 19 in the home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1-1) when he came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute. In February 2012, Füllkrug signed his first professional contract with a term until June 2015. On March 24, 2012 (27th matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal with the opening goal to make it 1-0 in a 1-1 draw at home against FC Augsburg . In addition to "Fulness", he got another nickname: "Gap". In January 2013 he injured his right knee and was out for a long time.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth

In August 2013, Füllkrug moved to SpVgg Greuther Fürth on loan to the 2nd Bundesliga until the end of the 2013/14 season . In November 2013 (13th matchday), the striker scored four goals for the game association in a 6-2 away win against Erzgebirge Aue , including a hat trick in the first half.

1. FC Nuremberg

For the 2014/15 season , Füllkrug did not return to Bremen, but switched to Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Nürnberg . He made his debut at Nuremberg on August 3, 2014 against FC Erzgebirge Aue. The first league goal for his new club was Füllkrug in November 2014 (13th matchday) in the 1: 2 defeat against SV Sandhausen . In March 2015 he suffered cartilage damage in his left knee and was out for the rest of the season. In the second division season 2015/16 he scored 14 goals.

Hannover 96

In July 2016 he moved to Hannover 96 in his hometown . In his first season, Füllkrug had some teething problems and it took until matchday 13 when he scored his first goal against Erzgebirge Aue . However, he never got beyond the role of the Joker. This should change after André Breitenreiter became a coach. He regularly put Füllkrug in the starting line-up. In total, he was able to achieve five hits; the team rose to the Bundesliga. In the following Bundesliga season, Füllkrug was Hanover’s top scorer with 14 hits and thus made a significant contribution to keeping the class. Consequently, he aroused the interest of other clubs; Borussia Mönchengladbach was willing to pay between 15 and 20 million euros in transfer fees for a transfer in summer 2018. However, there was no transfer and Füllkrug stayed in Hanover. In the following season he completed 13 games in the league for Hanover, in which he scored two goals before a cartilage damage in his right knee was found. He had to be operated on and was out until the 33rd match day.

His contract in Hanover originally ran until 2022.

Return to Werder Bremen

For the 2019/20 season , Füllkrug returned to Werder Bremen. After scoring twice in the first four games of the season, he suffered a cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus tear on his left knee during training in mid-September 2019 . At the beginning of June 2020, he returned to team training; the season, which was interrupted for several weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was still running at this time. On June 14, 2020 (31st matchday) he was finally used again in the league game at SC Paderborn and scored a goal in SV Werder's 5-1 victory.

National team

With Bremen he played in the highest junior leagues and showed his goal danger. It was often used prematurely in the higher age groups. Nevertheless, it was not until 2010 that he was appointed to a junior team of the DFB for the first time and made his first international appearance in the U-18 national team on November 16 . The following year, "Lücke", as he is known because of his noticeable tooth gap, played seven times for the U-19 national team and scored five goals. Between 2013 and 2014 he played nine times in the U-20 team and scored three goals.

Private

Füllkrug's sister Anna-Lena also plays as a striker for the women's team at Hannover 96 ; his grandfather Gerd was active for SV Arminia Hannover in the 2nd division.
