Davie Selke (born January 20, 1995 in Schorndorf ) is a German football player of Ethiopian and Czech descent. He has been under contract with Werder Bremen as a loan player from Hertha BSC since the end of January 2020 .

Life

Selke's father came to Germany from Ethiopia when he was a child . He worked as a fitness coach at Werder Bremen. His mother comes from the Czech Republic . Davie Selke has only German citizenship .

Beginnings

Selke grew up in Winterbach in Baden-Württemberg . His first club was the FV Weinstadt. He then played for VfB Stuttgart and then until 2009 for 1. FC Normannia Gmünd . He then worked in the youth department of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim until 2012 . During the winter break of the 2012/13 season, Selke moved to the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen , for whose second team he was eligible to play from January 31, 2013, but was initially used in the youth team.

Werder Bremen

Davie Selke (2013)

On August 11, 2013 (2nd matchday) he played his first game in the senior division. In the 0-1 defeat in the away game against SV Meppen , he came on for Marcel Hilßner in the 58th minute . He scored his first goal in the Regionalliga Nord on August 18, 2013 (3rd matchday) in a 3-2 home win against SV Eichede with the winning goal in the 83rd minute. In this, his second season, he was also used three times for the Bundesliga team, for which he made his debut on November 3, 2013 (11th matchday) - in the 64th minute - in a 3-2 home win against Hannover 96 .

After Selke caused a sensation at the U-19 European Championship , his contract was extended to June 30, 2018 in September 2014. He scored his first competitive goal in the first main round of the DFB Cup of the 2014/15 season against FV Illertissen , when he scored 3-1 from Bremen after being substituted for Fin Bartels in extra time. On September 20, 2014 (4th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal against FC Augsburg . During the 2014/15 season , Selke made his breakthrough at Werder under the new coach Viktor Skripnik , under whom he had already played in the U23.

RB Leipzig

For the 2015/16 season , Selke moved to the second division club RB Leipzig , where he signed a contract until 2020. For RB he scored 10 league goals in his first season, making him Leipzig's most successful goalscorer. The team reached second place and was promoted directly to the first Bundesliga . In the 2016/2017 season , Selke was mostly a substitute player and contributed four goals this season to the runner-up at RB Leipzig.

Hertha BSC

He joined Hertha BSC for the 2017/18 season . On October 19, 2017, he scored his first competitive goal for Hertha BSC in the UEFA Europa League in the 2-1 defeat by Zorya Luhansk . With two goals in the game against 1.FC Köln (2-1) on April 14, 2018, he scored the 1,000th home goal in the Bundesliga for Hertha BSC. During the preparation for the season he suffered a pneumothorax in a duel in training and was unable to play the first games. On February 9, 2019, he played his 100th Bundesliga game in a 3-0 away win in Mönchengladbach and scored his 25th goal in the Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen

After Hertha BSC had signed two strikers with Krzysztof Piątek and Matheus Cunha in the winter transfer period of the 2019/20 season , Selke returned to Werder Bremen at the end of January 2020. He was loaned for a year and a half by the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club; afterwards there is a purchase obligation under “certain conditions”.

National team

He made his debut in the jersey of a national team of the DFB on May 25, 2011 in Berlin in the test international match of the U16 national team against France, when he came on for Saïd Benkarit in the 73rd minute. He made his debut for the U17 national team on August 24, 2011 in Kelsterbach in an international test match in a 4-0 win against Turkey. In this game he scored his first international goal with the goal to 2-0 in the 63rd minute. For the U18 national team , he completed seven international matches and scored four goals. In his last game for this national team on May 16, 2013 in Moscow against the selection of Russia, he scored two international goals for the first time.

In the U19 national team , he first came on August 14, 2013 in the 4-0 win against Hungary in Dunaújváros for use. In the game of the first qualifying round for the U19 European Championship , he scored four goals on October 12, 2013 in a 5-0 win over Latvia in Minsk . In the 19 to 31 July 2014 in Hungary discharged 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship scoring Selke in the three group matches five goals. In the semifinals against the selection of Austria, he scored the 1-0 in a 4-0 win. With the 1-0 win on July 31, 2014 in the final against Portugal , he was European champion with the German selection and top scorer with six goals in the tournament , which he set the 2011 record set by the Spaniard Álvaro Morata .

Selke has been active for the U20 national team since November 2014 . He decided not to take part in the 2015 U20 World Cup in New Zealand in order to concentrate on preparing for the season with his new club, RB Leipzig .

On July 15, 2016, he was appointed to the squad for the Olympic football tournament in Rio de Janeiro . He scored two goals in five games and won the silver medal with the team. On November 1, 2016, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf together with the Olympic soccer team .

Selke took part in the U21 European Football Championship in Poland in 2017 . With the 1-0 final victory against Spain , the German U21 team became European champions on June 30, 2017 in Krakow . Selke scored two goals for Germany during the tournament.

Since Selke has not yet played a competitive game for the German senior team , he would still be eligible to play for the Czech national team.
