history
1904 to 1914
1. FC Normannia was founded on July 29, 1904 as a merger of the two Schwäbisch Gmünder clubs Alemannia and Fortuna . The sponsor club is the Stuttgarter Kickers , which entered Gmünd as the first club on September 24, 1904 and won there 13-0. In the period that followed, football became very popular in the city, which is traditionally characterized by gymnastics, but this did not free the young club from financial worries and money issues, which almost led to an early end. In addition, with clubs like Fortuna or Suevia , competition grew again and again in their own city. In 1909 it was possible to celebrate promotion for the first time by winning the C-Class. Normannia belonged to the next higher B-Class until 1914. With the beginning of the war in 1914, club life also ceased in the town of Gmünd. Of 111 club members, 26 died in the war.
1919 to 1933
The later honorary chairman Hans Aich took over the management of the association in 1919. The most urgent task was the search for a venue. On February 21, 1919, the Stuttgart general office approved the use of the parade ground in Schwerzer for football games. The Normannia Stadium is still there today. As early as 1920, with the promotion to the A-class, in 1921 the march through to the Württemberg district league , which at that time was the top division in the German league system. After immediate descent was in the formal league title to be won sovereign, but the rise was suspended due to a league reform of the highest leagues. In the 1920s there was not only football, but also athletics and heavy athletics . In 1929 an own swimming department followed. In 1932/33 the club played again in the top division. In games against clubs such as VfB Stuttgart , Stuttgarter Kickers or Union Böckingen , the team only earned two plus points and fell significantly again. For the season 1933/34 Normannia was assigned to the new district class.
1933 to 1945
The history of the association during the Nazi era is largely unprocessed . For the Jewish members, such as B. the hockey player Hugo Kahn or the supporter of the soccer team Ludwig Neumaier this meant the end of the club. With the opening of the Jahn sports field, the club received a modernized stadium, which was inaugurated in front of 3,000 spectators in a game against VfR Aalen . In August 1934, a merger with the 1st Sports Club Gmünd 1895 and the Velociped Club Gmünd 1888, arranged “from above”, took place . In addition, the Normannia was exempted from competition in the immediate vicinity by banning the DJK , which was also very popular with viewers in football. The city was also officially renamed "Schwäbisch Gmünd".
The club commuted mainly between district and district class, but the game operation could be maintained until 1945. In the last year of the Gauliga Württemberg 1. FC Normannia was assigned to the top division.
1966 until today
In 1966, Normannia reached the promotion games to the Regionalliga Süd as the Württemberg championship - at that time the second highest division - but failed to FC 08 Villingen , Germania Forst and SV Oberkirch.
In 1972 the team failed in the semi-finals of the German amateur championship only just at the later title holder FSV Frankfurt .
In 1977 Normannia took part in the DFB Cup for the first time . There they sensationally defeated the second division team SC Fortuna Köln 2-0 in the first round . However, they were eliminated in the next round against the amateurs of FC Augsburg with 1: 2.
After several years in the top amateur leagues in Baden-Württemberg, the team had to relegate to the eight-class district league Kocher-Rems in 1994. She stayed there until she was promoted to the regional league in 2000. There Normannia was second immediately behind the 2nd team of SSV Ulm 1846 . The next season, which the team finished as champions and thus rose to the association league, was a special one for Gmünder football. Because in addition to Normannia, TSB Schwäbisch Gmünd and the now defunct FC Victoria Schwäbisch Gmünd also played in the regional league. After a 6th place in the first association league season, Normannia was promoted to the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga in the second year - together with local rivals Heidenheimer SB .
Since the 2004/05 season, Normannia played in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, where they were able to establish themselves with a placement in the midfield. In the 2007/2008 season, she even looked briefly at a possible promotion to the regional league. An average of 250 spectators came to the games, 500 and more for top games.
In the 2007/2008 season, the club took part in the DFB Cup for the second time. There he lost in front of 4,500 spectators in the Scholz Arena in Aalen with 0: 3 against the Bundesliga relegated Alemannia Aachen . With 48 points, they finished the league season in 9th place.
The 2008/2009 season finished Normannia again with 48 points in ninth place in the table. After seven years of activity, successful coach Alexander Zorniger left the club and became assistant coach to Markus Babbel at Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart. The only 20-year-old midfielder Dominik Kaiser moved to TSG Hoffenheim II.
The 2009/2010 season ended Normannia in 7th place, but played the best league season in its history. Despite this fact, and that even a better placement was frivolously lost, coach Lothar Mattner had to leave after only one season and switched to the new league competitor SSV Reutlingen. The reasons for this were differences with the board of directors. The new coach was Helmut Dietterle , who was, among other things, coach at VfR Aalen and TSV Crailsheim.
In the 2010/11 season, the Gmünder improved their league record again and finished the round in 5th place. Once again, a negative run in the middle of the first round prevented a better performance and parallel to the previous year, the previous coach Helmut Dietterle left the club at the end of the season . In the final of the WfV Cup, Normannia was defeated by third division club 1. FC Heidenheim just 0-2. a. defeated the Stuttgarter Kickers.
On June 20, 2011, the club announced that from the following season (2011/12) Dieter Märkle will be the successor to the vacant position, but who terminated his contract with Normannia after the first half of the season in December 2011 to become youth coach at FC To become Augsburg . Rainer Kraft became his successor in January 2012 . After relegation, they have been playing in the association league since 2012/13. Completely surprisingly, the FCN rose after seven years as the table penultimate from the league, the loss of the regular Stanislaus Bergheim (to VfR Aalen) and defensive strategist Mark Mangold (end of career) could not be compensated at any time.
In the association league, the club started a fresh start. Football president Roland Zink took responsibility for the relegation, which also exacerbated the financial situation. His successor, Heinz Eyrainer, began a rebuilding with the aim of consolidation. For Rainer Kraft, who was dismissed for a severance fee of 10,000 euros, Normannia signed a new coach with ex-player Patrick Widmann. The budget of the first team has been reduced by 40 percent, the focus is now on “players with a stable odor”. H. with connections to the club. The bankruptcy was averted through a large donation campaign in autumn 2012, which raised 32,100 euros. Normannia reached 8th place in the table at the end of the season.
