The 1st Göppingen Sports Club 1895 e. V. , or 1. Göppinger SV for short , is a sports club from Göppingen .
history
Foundation phase
The 1st Göppingen football club, founded on October 13, 1905 , initially only competed in friendly matches. It was not until October 1908 that the club became a member of the South German Football Association and took part in the league competition for the first time the following year. After the First World War paralyzed gaming operations, reconstruction began in December 1918. In 1919 the district championship was won and the Göppingen football club was promoted to the A class. In the same year the entry in the club register took place and the club activities were expanded to include a singing department and a hockey department.
On April 24, 1920, an extraordinary general meeting approved the merger with the 1st Athletics Club in Göppingen , founded on August 11, 1895 , which had made a name for itself primarily through its weightlifters and wrestlers. Göppinger Sportverein 1895 e. V. «. The first task was to improve the sports facilities. Much of the work was done on their own by the members of the association. A wooden grandstand was built that was in operation until 1980 and the cost of which was one billion marks due to inflation .
Success in football
In 1923 he was promoted to the district league and immediately took second place behind VfB Stuttgart . In 1926 they won the district championship, missed promotion to the newly founded Zollern district league, which took place a year later. In the following years, the team played with the front, but won no title.
In 1930 it was decided to build a clubhouse and in 1932 a cinder track was built around the lawn, on which athletes and cyclists can compete.
In 1934, the club's football team made it to the Gauliga, which had been newly created a year earlier . Direct relegation in 1935 was followed by re-promotion in 1936, but also re-relegation in 1937. In 1938 and 1941 they failed in the promotion round to the Württemberg Gauliga. In 1943 he was promoted to the Gauliga again. This ascent was followed by the greatest success when in 1944 they came first in the Gauliga ahead of the Stuttgarter Kickers and thus won the Württemberg championship. However, at the games for the German championship in 1944, the first opponent, the Saarbrücken war game community , was the last stop.
After the Second World War , it took a long time before gaming operations could be resumed. The sports field was initially converted into a coal store by American soldiers and later a baseball field. For the 1945/46 season, the club was divided into the then second-class state league Württemberg, from which he was relegated in 1948.
In 1969 the footballers managed to qualify for the German amateur championship as second in the table in the amateur league Nordwürttemberg , in which the Göppingen failed only in the semi-finals at the eventual winner SC Jülich in 1910 . The following season - just in time for the 75th anniversary - brought an even greater success with promotion to the Regionalliga , at that time the second highest division in Germany. The return to the national football stage ended after only one season with 28:44 points and 17th place in the table with immediate relegation.
In 1973 the women's department of the club was founded. The following years were marked by fluctuations. In 1978, however, the qualification for the reformed Oberliga Baden-Württemberg succeeded when they were runner- up behind SSV Ulm in 1846 . In the 1984/85 season, the sports club had to descend after 17 years of membership in the top amateur class from the league. In 1991 the class could not be held in the Association League Württemberg and it was relegated to the state league , from which one should relegate in 1994 to the district league. After returning to the state league, the team rose in the 2008/09 season via relegation to the Württemberg Association League. In the 2010/11 season you had to be content with 4th place, although you still had a chance of promotion until the end. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, three Brazilians were signed, who were discovered in a friendly against the Artsul Futbol Club.
While the Göppingen sports club failed twice in the promotion games to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in 2014 and 2015, the long-awaited promotion was celebrated in 2016. The season ended the Red-Blacks in second place and had to take part in the promotion games for the third time in a row. The Göppingen team emerged victorious from the duels with TSG Weinheim (2: 2 and 1: 0) and on June 19, 2016, after 31 years of abstinence, they were promoted back to the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga . After seasons in the association, state and district leagues, this represents the greatest success in the club's recent history.
