The Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen are a football club with around 500 members from the suburb of Dorfmerkingen , part of the Württemberg Neresheim , with around 1,000 residents.
history
The club was founded in 1922 and played in lower-class amateur leagues until the 1990s. In 1997 the Sportfreunde were able to move up to the Württemberg Association League for the first time and won the runner-up here in the first season. In the promotion games to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg they won the decisive game against Durlach and were promoted to the Oberliga for the first time. In the same year, the club won the WFV Cup and qualified for the first round of the 1998/99 DFB Cup . Here he was defeated by the Stuttgarter Kickers with 0: 3. After a year in the Oberliga, he rose again to the Association League.
In 2000, the Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen won promotion to the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga again with the championship in the association league. This class could be held until relegation in 2003. After another relegation from the association league in 2007, the team played in the seventh-class state league Württemberg , season 2 from the 2007/08 season.
In 2017, the Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen surprisingly won the WFV Cup final against the Stuttgarter Kickers, who were playing in the Regionalliga Südwest at the time, with 3: 1 and thus for the second time in the club's history the WFV Cup. So they qualified again for the DFB Cup. Shortly afterwards, the national league season was decided with 1st place and thus promotion to the association league was achieved. Shortly afterwards, the loss of the WFV Cup, which had been won shortly before, caused a nationwide media sensation, which reappeared a few days later.
In the DFB Cup 2017/18 season , Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen was drawn in the first round of the then Bundesliga runner-up RB Leipzig . The cup game was played on August 13, 2017 in the Ostalb Arena in Aalen , as the local soccer field did not meet the increased safety regulations for such a game. There, the sports fans were eliminated from the competition after a 5-0 defeat.
In 2019, with the championship in the association league, the promotion to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg was achieved for the third time.
