Kerem Demirbay (born July 3, 1993 in Herten ) is a German football player who is primarily used as a central midfielder . He has been under contract with Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the 2019/20 season .

family

Kerem Demirbay was born to parents of Turkish origin in Herten in the Ruhr area and grew up in the Gelsenkirchen district of Buer .

Career

Beginnings

Demirbay began his career in the youth of FC Schalke 04 and later switched to SG Wattenscheid 09 . In the summer of 2011 he moved to Borussia Dortmund's A youth team ; the following year he made the jump into the squad of the club's second team , which had been promoted to the third division . On July 21, 2012, the 1st matchday of the 2012/13 season , he made his debut in professional football when he came on in the 74th minute for Konstantin Fring in the away game against VfL Osnabrück (0-2) . Three game days later, he scored his first goal for BVB's second team in a 2-1 home defeat against 1. FC Saarbrücken .

Change to Hamburger SV

During the winter break of 2013, Hamburger SV Demirbay signed for the 2013/14 season for free . After two torn muscle fibers in the hip area and a torn ligament in the ankle, Demirbay celebrated his Bundesliga debut on April 20, 2014 ; he was substituted on in the 1: 3 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg in the 73rd minute of play for Tomás Rincón .

On loan in the 2nd Bundesliga

Although Demirbay had performed well in preparation for the 2014/15 Bundesliga season , the then HSV coach Mirko Slomka did not consider him for the first round match of the DFB Cup and for the first two days of the Bundesliga. Instead, he came to a use in the second team, in which he scored a hit. In order to collect match practice at a higher level, Demirbay was loaned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern on September 1, 2014 until the end of the second division 2014/15 season. For 1. FCK he played 22 league games, in which he scored a goal against SV Darmstadt 98 on matchday 31 .

For the 2015/16 season Demirbay initially returned to HSV and entered the second training camp late after the U21 European Championship . He was not used by the new head coach of the first team, Bruno Labbadia , in the first round of the cup and was not in the squad in the first two Bundesliga games - also due to a bruised shin. In order to gain more match practice, Demirbay was loaned to the 2nd Bundesliga on August 25, 2015 until the end of the season, this time to Fortuna Düsseldorf . After he was sent off the pitch by referee Bibiana Steinhaus after a scuffle with a yellow-red card in an away game against FSV Frankfurt on November 29, 2015 , in which he had secured his team's victory with two goals , he said: "I think women have no place in men's football." This misogynist saying, for which he immediately apologized, brought him an investigation by the DFB control committee and the club's obligation to play a girls' soccer game in the D youth class as a To direct referee. Demirbay was criticized for his appearance, because he did not lead the game in a sports or referee outfit, but with dark jeans and a light coat.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

After the end of his loan in Düsseldorf, Demirbay moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . He received a three-year contract. He played 28 Bundesliga games in his first season and scored six goals. He scored the first goal on the sixth match day in a 2-1 win in the away game against FC Ingolstadt 04 with the goal to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute. On the 29th matchday he scored twice for the first time in a 5: 3 win at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach with the 3: 2 goals in the 58th and 5: 3 in the 89th minute.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

For the 2019/20 season, Demirbay switched to league competitor Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where he received a contract with a term of five years.

National team

From September 2011 to March 2013 Demirbay initially played twelve test matches for youth teams of the Turkish Football Association , in which he scored a goal. Since he does not have a Turkish passport, competitive games were not possible. In March 2015, Horst Hrubesch nominated him for the German U21 selection for the first time , but had to cancel his participation due to an injury. At the end of May 2015 Demirbay was appointed to the provisional and later to the final squad for the U21 European Championship in the Czech Republic . There he was not used in any of his team's four games.

On May 17, 2017 Demirbay was nominated by national coach Joachim Löw for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia . On the same day there was irritation about this nomination, as Demirbay had given the Turkish Football Association a promise to play for it in the future. Demirbay then stated that he had recklessly signed the letter without checking the content. In addition, the content of the letter does not correspond to the facts. He just wanted to check whether there was even a chance to play for Turkey. Demirbay also made it clear through his consultancy agency that he was only a German citizen and therefore not eligible to play in Turkey. He made his international debut for Germany on June 6th in Brøndby in a 1-1 draw against the Danish national team . In the third preliminary round match of the Confederations Cup, the second appearance was followed by the first competitive game when he was in the starting line-up against Cameroon and scored his first international goal shortly after the break with the 1-0. During the tournament this was his only appearance, at the end of the tournament he won the Confederations Cup together with the German team.
