Halil Altıntop [ haˈlil altɯntɔp ] (born December 8, 1982 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former Turkish - German football player and today's coach . His twin brother Hamit was also a professional footballer. Since July 2020 he has been assistant coach of the U16s at FC Bayern Munich .

Career

As a player

The striker began his career with his brother Hamit at Schwarz-Weiß Gelsenkirchen-Süd . Via TuS Rotthausen and SG Wattenscheid 09 , he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2003 , where he made his breakthrough in the 2005/06 season . In the list of goalscorers he took third place and scored 20 goals in the Bundesliga, one goal in the DFB Cup and one goal for the Turkish national team.

In 2006 he moved to FC Schalke 04 , where his brother Hamit was also under contract. In the first league game for his new employer against Eintracht Frankfurt he scored a goal, in the win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 he managed a double. In the first 18 games of the season Altıntop was in the starting line-up of FC Schalke 04, favored by injuries to his rivals Gerald Asamoah and Søren Larsen . Altıntop was considered particularly suitable for the 4-3-3 system that coach Mirko Slomka had played that season. On Matchday 19, Altıntop was ousted by Gustavo Varela , who injured himself again on Matchday 21 and thus helped Altıntop back into the starting line-up from Matchday 22. After the 26th matchday, Altıntop canceled his participation in a game of the Turkish national team, but for Schalke he was in the squad for every competitive game. After the last game day he underwent a groin operation . He had delayed the intervention because of the many unfit players in the Schalke squad, although the injury hindered him. During the season he scored six goals for Schalke. Altıntop was part of the Schalke team between 2006 and 2009. Under Felix Magath , who became coach in Gelsenkirchen in the summer of 2009, he was only used sporadically in the first half of the 2009/10 season.

On January 28, 2010 Altıntop moved to league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt . In June 2010, he extended his contract, which was initially limited to the end of the season, by two years until June 30, 2012. With Eintracht, he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2011 . For the 2011/12 season he moved to the first division Trabzonspor in Turkey . In two seasons for Trabzonspor he played 61 league games, in which he scored 13 goals. On June 28, 2013, he terminated his contract.

Altıntop moved to FC Augsburg in July 2013 . On September 17, 2015, he scored 0-1 at Athletic Bilbao, the first goal for FC Augsburg in a European Cup competition. His contract expired on June 30, 2017. He was the player with the most substitutions in the Bundesliga (140 times) until Patrick Herrmann was substituted for the 141th time on matchday 18 of the 2019/20 season .

For the 2017/18 season Altıntop moved to the Czech Republic for Slavia Prague on a free transfer . In January 2018 Altıntop returned to the 2nd Bundesliga for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and signed a contract that ran until 2019. He ended his career in the summer break of 2018; the contract was terminated.

As a trainer

On November 6, 2018 it was announced that Altıntop would support Markus Weinzierl's coaching staff at VfB Stuttgart until the end of the year . There he was responsible for " individual measures ". On April 20, 2019, after a clear defeat against FC Augsburg, the club announced on its website that Markus Weinzierl had been relieved of his job as head coach with immediate effect. a. also the individual trainer Halil Altıntop is no longer part of the team.

At the end of September 2019, he took over the position of head coach at the Bayern division TSV Schwaben Augsburg . Since July 2020 Altintop has been the assistant coach of the U16s at FC Bayern Munich under Alexander Moj .

In the national team

Like his brother, he played in the Turkish 21 team U and managed in 2005 made it into the A-national team . He was denied participation in a major tournament. Although he was nominated in the extended squad for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland , he was not considered for the final squad under national coach Fatih Terim . Since November 2011 he has not been called up to play for the national team.
