society

Varela's career began in his home country with El Tigre Colon. Via Lanza Méjico 68 and Nuevo Juventud, he became the multiple champion Nacional Montevideo in 1995 . With Nacional he was four times Uruguayan champion. In the years 1998 to 2002 116 appearances and 27 goals in the ranks of the Bolsos were recorded for Varela.

In August 2002 he was transferred to FC Schalke 04 . There he played 82 Bundesliga games and scored eight goals, plus he scored three goals in 18 European Cup games.

Serious injuries such as two torn inner ligaments (most recently in spring 2005) and a skull fracture, suffered in the DFB Cup match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on November 6, 2002, threw Varela back again and again. On February 10, 2007, in the home game against Hertha BSC , he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which put him out of action for several months. Varela's contract with Schalke, which originally ran until June 30, 2009, was terminated in January 2009 with retroactive effect to December 31, 2008.

Gustavo Varela was again under contract with his hometown club Nacional Montevideo in the 2009/10 season. There he played 23 games in Uruguay's top division, in which he hit the opposing goal nine times. He was also used eight times in the Copa Libertadores (one goal) and four times in the Liguilla (one goal). In the 2010/2011 season, depending on the sources, he played in 20 or 21 league games with the Argentine first division side Quilmes AC , which he had joined in June 2010. Then moved to the Uruguayan first division club Atlético Cerro . There he completed 21 games in the Primera División in the 2011/2012 season .

During his time at Cerro, he was charged by the Uruguayan judiciary with a total of ten other professional footballers for involvement in a fight on the occasion of the first division match between the clubs Cerro Largo FC and Club Atlético Cerro on May 6, 2012 . These were Pablo Bentancur , Andrés Ravecca , Mathías Rolero , Marcos Otegui , Gonzalo Viera , César Faletti , Óscar Morales , Marcel Román , Emiliano García and Carlos Figueredo . Against Washington Camacho also a charge of assault was directed in this connection.

His contract with the Montevideans ended on July 31, 2012. Then in August 2012 there was speculation about a possible engagement at the defensor amateur club in Paso de los Toros , which was then coached by Fabián O'Neill . At this time Varela completed his trainer education.

For the 2013/14 season he will be listed as a new addition to Cerro. In that season he was used in 22 first division games (no goal). At Apertura 2014 it will be listed as an exit with an unknown destination.

National team

In the Uruguayan U-23 selection, Gustavo Varela played six international matches (one goal) at the Torneo Preolímpico in Brazil in 2000. From his debut on November 15, 2000, to his last appearance on November 15, 2006, he played 24 caps for Uruguay . He didn't score a goal. As part of his international career, he took part with Celeste in the 2002 World Cup, where Uruguay failed in the preliminary round. He was also part of the team at the 2004 Copa America .
