Fabián Alberto O'Neill Domínguez (born October 14, 1973 in Paso de los Toros ) is a former Uruguayan football player of Irish descent who was a member of the Uruguayan national football team .
Career
In the club
Fabián O'Neill, who is often spelled Fabián O'Neil, began his professional career at his hometown club Nacional Montevideo , where he spent the period from 1992 to 1995 and with his team, which became Uruguayan champions in 1992, in the highest League played. In those three years he played 63 games and scored fifteen goals. In 1995 he moved to the Italian club Cagliari Calcio . He rose with his club in 1997 from Serie B , but rose again a year later. After Cagliari relegated again in 2000, he moved to the top club of Serie A Juventus Turin . After only 14 games, the clubs Juventus Turin and AC Perugia agreed on a swap in January 2002. O'Neill went to AC Perugia, but Davide Baiocco came to Juve . But at the end of the season he returned to Cagliari Calcio in Serie B, where he did not play a single game. In 2003 he wanted to end his career with his old club Nacional Montevideo and played five more games. Then he ended his career as a professional footballer, he only played and trained at a few amateur clubs in Uruguay.
In the national team
O'Neill took part with the junior selection of Uruguay in the Junior World Cup in 1993 in Australia and reached the quarter-finals with the team. He also played a total of 19 senior internationals, in which he scored two goals. He played his first international game on June 16, 1993 in the group stage at the Copa America against the USA , which they won 1-0. He played his last international match on May 16, 2002 against China in Shenyang . He was part of the Uruguayan squad for the 2002 World Cup , but was never used.
