Kabel eins (own spelling: Kabel Eins ) is a German private television broadcaster owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE . The full program began broadcasting on February 29, 1992 and was initially called Der Kabelkanal , later Kabel 1 .

program

The Kabel eins program mainly consists of feature films and television series , the episodes of which are repeated several times a week, as well as self-produced and commissioned entertainment formats with daily news, reportage magazines and documentary programs. The program also contains programs on culture, science and entertainment and is also aimed at older target groups.

With the platform kabeleins.tv, part of the program was also made available on the Internet from May 12, 2009. The self-produced series can be accessed there free of charge for seven days after the TV broadcast. After that they can be seen partly for free and partly for a fee on Joyn , the video-on-demand offer from ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE . The broadcaster also maintained a free online archive on the subject of cars.

Kabel eins received its broadcasting licenses from the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM). On February 16, 2012, BLM extended the broadcasting license for Kabel eins for a further 8 years until February 29, 2020.

history

On February 29, 1992 at 10:15 am, the cable channel went on air as a specialty entertainment program . The first broadcast was the British film A New Spirit at Rathbarney Castle (Happy ever after, 1954) with David Niven. The station's advertising slogan was “Good entertainment on the cable channel”; the accompanying clip showed a viewer disturbed by explosions and violence on television, who then discovered the cable channel with its “clean” program and relaxed. In fact, the Kabelkanal's program initially consisted primarily of older films. The station wanted to differentiate itself from the sensational programs of other private broadcasters. At that time, the cable channel could be received exclusively via the cable connections of the Deutsche Bundespost (1995–1999: Deutsche Telekom ).

At the start of broadcasting, the cable channel was initially broadcast twice via the Eutelsat satellite at position 13 ° East: analog and unencrypted in PAL and in the broadcast format D2-MAC . Analogue distribution was gradually discontinued as early as August 1992 by replacing the program's soundtrack partially, later permanently, with a loop that said the program could only be received in D2-MAC or via cable. This transponder was cleared by September 1992 at the latest. From this point on, the program could only be received in D2-MAC via satellite and served as a signal feed for the cable networks. The unencrypted distribution was ended in the course of 1993 and encoded using the EuroCrypt encryption process . A curiosity from this time is that only the TV sound of the station was broadcast via the orbit position Copernicus 23.5 ° East as a sound sub-carrier for another program. Apparently this signal was also used to feed the cable network. With the cable channel, the Deutsche Bundespost, which was the sole owner of the large cable networks at the time, wanted to make its offer more attractive compared to the then rapidly growing direct satellite reception. The cable channel was a joint venture between the Kirch Group and the Deutsche Bundespost, the mostly old program components (films, series) came from the television archive of the film dealer Leo Kirch . It was only later that unencrypted reception via the satellite ( Astra ) was also possible. ProSieben , then part of the Kirch Group, held a 45 percent stake in the cable channel at the time.

On December 24, 1994, the cable channel became the transmitter Kabel 1 . In this context, the coding via Eutelsat II-F1 was also canceled, so that the station could again be received unencrypted in D2-MAC via satellite. Kabel 1 has been connected to the Astra 1a satellite since April 7, 1995, and from then on it could be received unencrypted throughout Europe. The distribution via Eutelsat was then stopped. The program was gradually expanded: from July 14, 1997, the broadcast was licensed for a full program . Kabel 1 is now a wholly owned subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE .

On August 21, 1997, the Kabel-1 logo had to be redesigned due to a lawsuit from ARD . ARD prevailed in court with the opinion that the appearance of the “1” enclosed in the cable symbol could lead to confusion with the logo of the public television broadcaster Das Erste . As a precaution, the "1" has been removed from the logo; what remained was a "stub" right in the middle of the emblem. After many years of legal dispute, the ARD's lawsuit was finally dismissed in all points in October 1999 and the logo got its "1" back. On this occasion, the on-air design was also extensively revised.

In 1999, Kabel 1 expanded its offering to include additional information broadcasts. The adventure series started back then with the magazines Adventure Auto and Adventure Life as well as the magazine Challenge .

In 2001 the on-air design was changed again.

In 2004 the early program on Saturday and Sunday was expanded to include a children's program. The cartoon network block has been running there on Saturday since December 25, 2004 . Cartoons were shown on Sunday, followed by Disney Time . Disney Time was given up on December 30, 2012 without replacement.

On March 28, 2005, the station name was changed to kabel eins , and the logo and appearance changed again. On June 1, 2006, the pay TV offshoot kabel eins classics started . On February 11, 2008, the station presented a new slogan (“Echt kabel eins”) and a new design, while kabel eins classics kept its design based on the old logo (for the time being).

Since January 31, 2010, Kabel eins has been broadcasting its program on kabel eins HD via the Astra HD + platform as well as Kabel Deutschland for Germany in HD and HD Austria for Austria.

On April 1, 2010, Kabel eins broadcast a football match live for the first time in the history of the station. It was the match between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Fulham in the UEFA Europa League . The reason for this was that the Hamburger SV Europa League game took place almost at the same time and was to be broadcast on Sat.1 . For this reason, those responsible at ProSiebenSat.1 Media , the rights holder for the transmission, decided to transfer Wolfsburg - Fulham to Kabel eins. In the meantime, Kabel eins and Sat.1 regularly broadcast the Europa League as part of the sports program Ran . The broadcast of the Europa League match between Schalke 04 and Twente Enschede on March 15, 2012 gave the station the highest ratings in the station's history with 4.34 million viewers.

On January 17, 2013, Katja Hofem-Best took over the management from Karl König, who switched to the management of ProSiebenSat.1 TV Germany.

From Good Friday to Easter Monday 2014 and Christmas 2014, the HD channels of what was then ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG could be received unencrypted.

On August 31, 2015, kabel eins carried out another relaunch. In addition to the on-air design and website, the logo was also revised. It is now more angular and in a bright orange. In addition, a testimonial figure was introduced into the program. This should bring the brand and the broadcaster closer to the viewer and build a bond with them. Nexa Italic was chosen as the new font and replaced the previous font Neo Sans.

On May 4, 2016, ProSiebenSat.1 announced that the station kabel eins Doku would be launched in the second half of 2016 as an offshoot of kabel eins. Thorsten Pütsch took over the management of the station. The station concentrates entirely on documentaries and reports and can be seen on free-to-air television .

Since October 23, 2017, the station could also be streamed in HD on Magine TV in the Comfort HD or Deluxe HD package, until it was discontinued at the end of February 2019 .
