The firm is a television series of the ARD , which from the series The fat has emerged. This was first broadcast in 2005. The television series is a production by Studio Hamburg Produktion für Film & Fernsehen GmbH on behalf of the ARD joint editorial team for series. Each episode has a running time of around 48 minutes.

During the shooting of the 5th season of the series Der Dicke , the main actor Dieter Pfaff died in March 2013. After the death of the protagonist , it was announced that Herbert Knaup will be taking on a new leading role alongside Sabine Postel . The series was continued under the title Die Kanzlei .

The series is about the lawyer Gregor Ehrenberg, who helps the little people with a big heart, stomach, mind and self-confidence, with the support of his assistant Yasmin Ülküm and his unconventional cleaning lady Gudrun and thus gives his own life more meaning. The series takes place in Hamburg-Altona . In Ehrenberg's work, legally correct action and refined behavior are not necessarily the focus, but rather he helps his clients with rather unconventional means. Further characters in the series are initially Ehrenberg's ex-wife and the neighbor and her daughter. In particular, the conflicts with his ex-wife are a frequent topic of the consequences. In later episodes, Isabel von Brede is added to his side as another main character. This often takes over the promising cases and thus compensates for Ehrenberg's altruism . A constantly recurring figure is the policeman and later husband of Gudrun, Gerd Wohlers. From episode 53, the lawyer Markus Gellert also appears, who eventually becomes Isabel von Brede's new partner.

The first to third episodes of the first season were filmed in November and December 2003, the remaining episodes were filmed from January to June 2004, episodes 14 to 19 were filmed from May to August 2006, the remaining episodes from January to May 2007. The shooting of the third season of Der Dicke , in which Sabine Postel first appeared as Isabel von Brede and became the leading actress, began in January 2009 and lasted until April 2009. The fourth season was filmed from the beginning of August 2010 to May 2011.

The first season of Die Kanzlei began to be broadcast on September 8, 2015 , in the last episode of which Dieter Pfaff was to be seen again as Gregor Ehrenberg, but had died in the meantime, and filming began on October 29, 2013. From November 29, 2016 to January 17, 2017, the first aired the second season. Production of six new episodes began on January 30, 2017. These aired in the fall of 2017. This was followed by the broadcast of another season with eleven episodes from November 2018 to January 2019. On March 14, 2019, filming began for the fifth season with thirteen episodes, and the episodes have been broadcast since August 4, 2020.

The filming location of the first season of Die Kanzlei is on Leverkusenstrasse . The lawyer's office up to the fifth season was located on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße , within sight of the court , where the film is also being shot, opposite the office is the Hamburg public prosecutor's office, in the Hamburg-Neustadt district . The rooms from the fifth season are located in a renovated factory site in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld .

The rapper Alpa Gun subsequently has pride and prejudice as well as a guest appearance in Neustart .

In August 2020 it became known that a film spin-off of the series was being shot. The working title is Die Kanzlei: Springflut .
