Stephan Rick (* 1974 in Rosenheim ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Rick trained as a camera assistant at the Bavarian Academy for Television in 1996 and studied theater , film and television studies as well as art history at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1996 to 1998 . He then took up directing studies at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy with a focus on scenic film . In 2002 he was a visiting student at the Tisch School of the Arts , New York University's film school . Some of the short films he made at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy have been shown at festivals and have received awards. For his forty-minute diploma film in the direction of life , he received the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award 2006 for the best short film.

Stephan Rick has worked as a freelance director and screenwriter since graduating in 2005. As a co-author, he developed the concept, wrote the book and directed the television series Alone Against Time , which, among other awards, received nominations for the German Television Prize 2010 and the International Emmy Awards 2011. His first full-length feature film was the 2010 psychodrama Under Neighbors with Maxim Mehmet , Charly Hübner and Petra Schmidt-Schaller in the leading roles. Rick wrote the book together with Silja Clemens , with whom he had already worked on Alone Against Time . Under Neighbors , the English title The Good Neighbor premiered in the main competition of the Shanghai International Film Festival 2011 and was shown at numerous other festivals as well as in the ARD main evening program. The film also brought Stephan Rick a nomination for the German Director Award Metropolis 2012 in the category “Best Director Cinema”, Charly Hübner won the 2013 Golden Camera for his portrayal of a sociopath .

In 2014 Rick staged his first Sunday crime thriller for Das Erste with Magdeburg Police Call 110 A Murderous Idea . In the same year, filming began on his theatrical adaptation of Martin Suter's bestselling novel The Dark Side of the Moon . Moritz Bleibtreu , Jürgen Prochnow and Nora von Waldstätten took on the leading roles. The film The Dark Side of the Moon premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in September 2015 and was released in cinemas on January 14, 2016.

With Patrick Flueger and Val Kilmer as the leading actors, Rick directed the independent thriller The Super, produced by Dick Wolf among others, in the USA in 2016 . In 2018, Stephan Rick shot a crime scene for the first time , the episode ricochet with investigators Falke and Grosz . It ran the following year at the Emden-Norderney Film Festival .
