Val Edward Kilmer (born December 31, 1959 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor .

Life

Val Kilmer is the youngest student ever to enter the Juilliard School in New York City. After playing Orestes in Electra and Orestes , as well as the title roles in Richard III. and Macbeth , he served as co-author of the play How It All Began ( How it all began ), after the eponymous autobiography of West Berlin Links terrorists Michael Baumann . The play was performed in the early 1980s under the direction of Des McAnuff.

He made his Broadway debut in 1983 in Slab Boys , where he appeared on stage with Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon . Kilmer was also seen on stage in Henry IV , Part One of William Shakespeare at Joseph Papp's Delacorte Theater, as well as starring in As You Like It at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Kingdoms followed , the title role in Hamlet at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and most recently Tis Pity She's A Whore , again at the Joseph Papp Theater.

Kilmer made his feature film debut in 1984 in the comedy Top Secret! by Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker . This was followed by Real Genius . His breakthrough came as the antagonist of Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's hit film Top Gun . He was then seen in the fantasy epic Willow , in Kill me again and Half-Blood .

In the film adaptation of rock legend Jim Morrison in The Doors , he sang all the concert sequences himself in the title role. Kilmer made a guest appearance in the film Noir Dead Girl , before starring in Batman Forever . After filming Heat alongside Robert De Niro and Al Pacino , Kilmer took on the projects DNA - The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Spirit and Darkness Attack, both of which he starred.

John Frankenheimer , with whom he met in 1996 The Island of Dr. Moreau turned the film, then vowed never to work with Kilmer again. Similar statements were made by Ron Howard and others in the mid-1990s who portrayed the actor as a difficult character. From the late 1990s Kilmer received hardly any leading roles in major Hollywood productions, in 2005 he was seen in a supporting role in Alexander (alongside leading actor Colin Farrell ).

Val Kilmer has also appeared in various television productions, including The Man Who Broke 1000 Chains and Gore Vidal's Billy The Kid .

In 2007 Kilmer published a book and a small edition CD. Both articles are only available from Kilmer's official website. According to statements on the website, the proceeds from the sale are to be donated to institutions to which Kilmer feels connected. The book, entitled Jack's Gandhi, contains poems and free poetry that Val Kilmer dedicated to his two children. The cover picture for the book - a hand-drawn portrait of Gandhi - comes from his son.

In 2008, Kilmer voiced the KITT car in the new Knight Rider series (as well as in the accompanying pilot Knight Rider ). He's featured a lot in direct-to-DVD films lately .

In 2012 he starred in the music video To Be the Best by Tenacious D , the band of actor Jack Black .

In addition, the American punk band Bowling for Soup wrote their song Val Kilmer , in which they dealt with the general situation in the film world.

Val Kilmer was married to actress Joanne Whalley from 1989 to 1996 , whom he met while filming Willow . From this marriage he has two children, Mercedes and Jack.

In 2016, Val Kilmer's friend and fellow actor Michael Douglas announced that Kilmer was suffering from throat cancer. Kilmer initially denied this. In 2017, however, he admitted suffering from the disease but was cured.
