Frozen - Something Has Survived (Original Title: The Thaw ) is an American - Canadian horror - science fiction film by Mark A. Lewis from 2009 , in which the topic of current global warming is taken up and its consequences are exaggerated. Melting snow in the Arctic is releasing organisms that have long been believed dead and threaten the continued existence of humanity. Val Kilmer and Martha MacIsaac play the leading roles as father and daughter.

The message of the film can be interpreted as an appeal to viewers to rethink their consumption-oriented behavior and, if necessary, to change them.

action

The biologist Dr. David Kruipen and his colleagues Jane, Edward and Inuit Nuti are working far away from civilization in an arctic research station on a study on the influence of global warming on polar bears. On one of their forays across the inhospitable island, they discover a mammoth that has been preserved in the ice for thousands of years and that is emerging under the snow cover due to global warming . They set up a tent camp at the site to expose the animal in a professional manner. But they also unearth highly dangerous insects that have nested in the well-preserved pachyderms and survived. Gradually, all team members are attacked by the parasite. He destroys the inside of the body. The males inflict a wound on the victim with a bite, the females lay their eggs in this skin opening. This is followed by malaise, shortness of breath and finally death. However, Kruipen became infected intentionally in order to later carry the parasite into the civilized world as a host and trigger a pandemic . He wants to shake up humanity and achieve a responsible use of resources and nature.

Jane, herself infected and seriously ill from the insect, decides to thwart this plan and sees no other way out than to shoot her colleagues Edward and Kruipen to prevent the further spread of the pest. With the last of her strength, she drives to the base station, where a group of visitors, consisting of three biology students, Kruipen's daughter Evelyn and a rancher, has now arrived. There, due to a severe clouding of consciousness, she can no longer explain the cause of her illness to anyone and she dies within a few hours. But in their luggage, the excursion participants find notes in which the research team describes in detail what made them sick, so that the group now knows what they are dealing with and what danger they are in. Immediately they decide to call for help from the mainland by radio. In the course of the next few days, the young student Ling and the experienced ranger Bart become infected and die.

The remaining three people are waiting in the open air to be evacuated. Federico, who has been able to keep his infection a secret, threatens the other two remaining, Evelyn and Atom, with a weapon, because he knows that he should be left here as an infected person. To her surprise, Evelyn's father crawls towards the base station. Kruipen had survived Jane's attempt to kill seriously injured. After he has shot Federico, he sends Evelyn and Atom back into the building under a pretext and locks the doors from the outside. He succeeds in convincing the helicopter crew arriving in the meantime that he is the only survivor of the disaster. Evelyn and Atom can free themselves from their prison through a window. Atom tries to stop the helicopter while it is taking off by hanging on the runners - but crashes and succumbs to his injury. In her final desperation, Evelyn snatches Federico's rifle and causes the aircraft to crash with several shots. The helicopter goes up in flames. A subsequent helicopter squadron will then bring them home safely.

While a radio station was broadcasting information about Evelyn's reports, a hunter called his dog away from a dead bird that the dog had eaten. Beetles emerge from the bird's body. The final scene shows the hunter's vehicle on its way to a big city.
