In 1911, adopted child Sean McKnight butchered his entire family at home with a knife. A bad storm is raging, and Sean can't remember anything later during interrogation.

100 years later, Bill McCormick and his wife Brooklyn, the two brothers Adam and Isaac and the doctor Dr. Andrew Lipski out and about in a tour bus. During a stop at a gas station, they meet the clerk Courtney. As they drive on, a woman dressed in white suddenly stands on the road, the driver dies while he collides with a tree while swerving. Jack, a local, rushes to help and brings her to his home to keep them safe from the approaching storm. The injured Bill begins to fantasize, feeling that scary things are going on in this house and that Jack is not who he claims to be. There is no telephone. Adam borrows Jack's car and wants to go to the gas station. On the way there he discovers Courtney, who has broken down with her car. He takes her with him, but the road is closed due to fallen trees. There is no other option but to return to the house.

In time, all see the appearance of a little boy and a woman. Adam also sees the boy stab a little girl with a knife. Bill is unexpectedly dead in bed. The fear can now be felt. When Dr. Lipski is found with his throat cut, Adam confronts Jack. Jack tells him about the family tragedy 100 years ago. Courtney discovers a picture of the McKnight family servants. One of them is Jack.

Isaac, Brooklyn, Adam and Courtney flee through the misty forest at night. Here too, ghostly apparitions appear again. Brooklyn is killed. The other three recognize a lighted house. When they enter, the killed McKnight family and Dr. Lipski at the table, who take no notice of them, and Jack stands by as a house servant. He tells them that this was and always will be their home. After they run back into the forest, Isaac is also murdered. Adam finds graves with the names of all of his fellow travelers. Jack and Courtney appear. Jack tells him that they are all the reborn souls of the murdered and that Courtney has the soul of Sean. Courtney murdered everyone. Jack orders her to kill Adam too. However, she rams the knife into her own body. Then Sean appears and murders Jack.

The end of the film shows Adam and Courtney, who survived, in a cozy home. When Adam turns his back on her, she takes a knife and goes after him.
