Gilberto Mendes

Gilberto Mendes (born October 13, 1922 in Santos , São Paulo ; † January 1, 2016 there ) was a Brazilian composer.

Life

Gilberto Mendes studied with Cláudio Santoro and George Olivier Toni and was a student of Henri Pousseur and Pierre Boulez at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music . In 1965 he founded the Festival for New Music in Santos. In the 1970s and 1980s, he taught at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas , after which he was a music professor at the University of São Paulo .

In addition to instrumental works, he composed cantatas and motets . In addition to classical instruments, he also used noises from vacuum cleaners, kitchen machines, washing machines and televisions as well as text montages in his compositions.
