Mathias Haus (born November 22, 1963 in Essen ) is a German musician ( percussion , especially vibraphone , composition ), who has emerged primarily in the field of jazz .

Haus grew up in Düsseldorf as the son of harpist Marianne Haus and percussionist Friedbert Haus. At the age of 10 he received piano lessons from Ilonka von Nevay and joined his father's children's percussion ensemble. With this he studied from 1979 classical percussion at the Robert Schumann Conservatory . With Oliver Kels, he formed a jazz-oriented duo that recorded their first record. In 1983 he was appointed to the Ensemble 4 + 6 of the WDR , the u. a. Rainer Brüninghaus and Hugo Read belonged. In the same year he began studying vibraphone with Gary Burton and composition / arrangement with Hal Crook at the Berklee School of Music .

Back in Germany he formed the Mathias Haus Band (with Hugo Read, Vadislav Sendecki , Thomas Heidepriem and Thomas Alkier ), then a trio with Hartmut Kracht and Peter Weiss , and later with Dietmar Fuhr and Danny Schroeteler . Then he led a quintet with Hendrik Soll , Werner Neumann , Stefan Rademacher and Kurt Billker .

He also played duos with Read, with Sendecki and with Philipp van Endert , in whose band he also appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival . With Steve Swallow and Carla Bley he took part in the performance of ¾ at the Philharmonie Essen, alongside Uri Caine as the second soloist.

Since 1992 he has been a lecturer at the Cologne University of Music, Wuppertal Department ; in 1988 he had already taken over his father's percussion ensemble, Düsseldorf Percussion (with a CD production and many concerts and television appearances). There were also orchestral concerts under Karlheinz Stockhausen , Hans Werner Henze and Mauricio Kagel and world premieres of works by Manfred Trojahn , Oskar Gottlieb Blarr , Raimund Jülich , Gerhard Stäbler , David Graham and Christian Banasik in the forum 20 series .

He is also a member of the Düsseldorf jazz ensemble. He can also be heard on albums by Klaus König (Black Moments), Jörg Kaufmann , Axel Fischbacher , Alexandra Naumann, Esther Berlansky and Willy Ketzer .

Prizes and awards

Haus received the Gary Burton Award as an instrumentalist in 1987 and the John Dankworth Award as a composer the following year . In 1989 he was awarded the City of Düsseldorf's Music Prize. In 2002 he was honored with the Jazz Pot .
