Jörg Kaufmann (born January 6, 1960 ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor , soprano saxophone , flute , composition).

Live and act

From 1980 to 1983, Kaufmann studied school music (majoring in flute) and German at Saarland University , with Theo Brandmüller and Clemens Kremer , among others . From 1983 to 1990 he studied jazz (saxophone and flute) in Cologne with Jiggs Whigham , Axel Jungbluth , James Towsey and Wolfgang Engstfeld .

Kaufmann was then a member of Thilo Berg's big band and toured Germany and Europe with Alphonse Mouzon , Bob Mintzer , Slide Hampton , Frank Nimsgern , Christoph Spendel , Pete York , Barbara Morrison , Danny Gottlieb and Bobby Shew . He founded his own band and composed for Ludwig Hirsch . Between 2000 and 2008 he was a member of the SWR Big Band in Stuttgart, for which he also arranged. He played regularly with Barbara Dennerlein and taught at the Music Academy in Arnhem until 2010 .

He was also a businessman in productions by the Cologne Big Band, by Peter Herbolzheimer , Ron Williams , Sabine Sabine ( Fritz Brause ), Chaka Khan , Billy Cobham , Dieter Reith , Mathias Rüegg , Paul Kuhn , Bill Ramsey , Django Bates , Annie Whitehead , Hiram Bullock and John Scofield involved. He also worked with ensembles such as the WDR Big Band Cologne , NDR Big Band , the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra , the SWR Symphony Orchestra and the WDR Radio Orchestra Cologne . He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Leverkusener Jazztagem , Jazz Baltica , the Willisau Jazz Festival , the Rheingau Festival and the Stuttgart Theaterhaus Festival.

The last two CD releases under his own name are the 2008 production  Personal Heroes  (Joerg Kaufmann Quartet) and the CD Now and Zen produced in 2016   together with the German-Canadian percussionist Johannes Welsch. There are no compositions in the classical sense on this production, rather the entire CD is freely improvised.

After twenty years of teaching at the music academy in Arnhem, Kaufmann passed his second state examination for teaching in 2012. Since then he has worked as a teacher at the Bettine von Arnim comprehensive school in Langenfeld, but also continues to play in various band and concert projects.
