Ludwig Gustav Hirsch (born February 28, 1946 in Weinberg / Buch-St. Magdalena , Styria ; † November 24, 2011 in Vienna ) was an Austrian singer-songwriter and actor .
Life, education, career
Ludwig Hirsch was born as the son of a doctor in Eastern Styria, grew up in Vienna- Leopoldstadt and after finishing school he studied graphics at the University of Applied Arts , but then attended the Krauss drama school in Vienna. He made his debut in 1973 at the Regensburg City Theater . After that he was on stage in Wuppertal and at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg . From 1975 to 1979 Ludwig Hirsch was a member of the theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna.
In 1978 he began his career as a singer-songwriter with his debut album Dunkelgraue Lieder with critical, macabre- morbid lyrics. The broadcaster Ö3 forbade its song Come, Big Black Bird to be played after 10 p.m. because of the morbid and eerie atmosphere - for fear that listeners could commit suicide. Hirsch was an important representative of Austropop . In some of his works he also showed himself to be a modern interpreter of the “classic” Viennese songs (such as the “ Hobellied ” from 1834 ).
In 1991 and 1992, Hirsch and his band played many of his most famous songs in front of a total of more than 200,000 spectators, embedded in a framework. Often, however, Ludwig Hirsch only went on tour with his guitarist Johann M. Bertl.
His studio album Perlen achieved gold status in Austria. For this album he received the Amadeus Austrian Music Award . A new album was released in May 2006 with the name In Eternity Women . Then he sang the title Rebekka and I together with Rebekka Bakken . He also moderated the radio show Siesta on the Austrian radio station Ö3.
Ludwig Hirsch was married to the actress Cornelia Köndgen since 1977 . They had a son together.
On November 24, 2011, Ludwig Hirsch committed suicide on the grounds of the Vienna Wilhelminenspital . He had lung cancer and was hospitalized with pneumonia .
Hirsch received an honorary grave of the City of Vienna in the Gersthofer Friedhof (group 2, row 6, no. 59). On September 8, 2017 was in Vienna- Leopoldstadt of Ludwig Hirsch square named after him.

style
Ludwig Hirsch is best known for his bissig- sarcastic texts he a characteristic often way with a romantic and melancholic sounding melody combined. With this style of antagonism between text and music, he made the content of many of his songs more explosive.
