The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra , founded in 1945 , has held a prominent place in the international orchestral landscape for over 70 years. Matthias Foremny has been chief conductor since the 2013/14 season . He took over the position from Michael Hofstetter , who held this office from 2006 to 2013. With the start of the 2019/20 season, Thomas Zehetmair became the orchestra's chief conductor.

The orchestra gained its reputation under its founder and long-time director, Karl Münchinger . During this time, the orchestra was primarily known for its interpretation of works by JS Bach and WA Mozart. From 1995 to 2006, Dennis Russell Davies expanded the orchestral repertoire as chief conductor, particularly with works from the 20th century. He is still associated with the orchestra as an honorary conductor.

The first recordings go back to 1949 and are evidence of one of the most successful orchestral biographies in young post-war Germany. Most recently, a recording with Vivaldi concerts (Tacet) was released in 2013 under the direction of Ariadne Daskalakis and the CD "Horn Concerts" under the direction of Paul Meyer on ambitus .

Numerous internationally known soloists perform with the ensemble. These include Kolja Blacher , Julia Fischer , Daniel Hope , Steven Isserlis , Patricia Kopatchinskaja , Daniel Müller-Schott , Fazıl Say , Hélène Grimaud , Paul Meyer, Ian Bostridge , Renaud Capuçon , Gautier Capuçon , Nicolas Altstaedt , Christian Zacharias , Martin Fröst , Emmanuel Pahud and Fabio Biondi .

An important accent in the work of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra is the cooperation with Stuttgart educational institutions. In addition to numerous projects with the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts , the orchestra works with elementary school students and visually impaired young people as part of educational projects.

The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra fulfills its task as a musical ambassador through intensive and worldwide guest performances. After concerts in South Korea, France, Russia, Spain, Nepal, China and Japan in recent years, the orchestra has recently toured and made guest appearances to India and South America, Switzerland, France, Spain and the Netherlands.

In 2008, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra was awarded the European Chamber Music Prize of the European Cultural Foundation for its exceptional commitment .

The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra is funded by the State of Baden-Württemberg , the City of Stuttgart , Robert Bosch GmbH and L-Bank .
