Nicolas Altstaedt

Nicolas Altstaedt (* 1982 in Heidelberg ) is a German-French cellist .

Born to French-German parents, Nicolas Altstaedt was one of the last students of Boris Pergamenschikow at the Hanns Eisler University in Berlin . He completed his studies with Eberhard Feltz.

In 2010 Altstaedt received the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award at the Wiener Musikverein , after which he made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival . Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the BBC's New Generation Artist program, which includes appearances and recordings with all of the BBC orchestras, appearances at the Proms and at Wigmore Hall .

In 2011, at the suggestion of Gidon Kremer, he was given the artistic direction of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival ; in 2015, at the request of Adam Fischer , he took over the artistic direction of the Haydn Philharmonic .

In 2017 he played the Finnish premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Cello Concerto at the Helsinki Festival. In the coming seasons he will be on tour with the SWR Symphony Orchestra and Teodor Currentzis , the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. This is followed by debuts with the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France , NHK Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Detroit Symphony Orchestra , Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , Orchester National de France , Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra , Helsinki Philharmonic and Rotterdam Philharmonic. In 2017/2018 he was Artist in Spotlight at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam , in 2018/2019 he was Artist in Residence with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg.

He undertook and undertakes u. a. Performances with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the Vienna Symphony , the Czech Philharmonic , the Kremerata Baltica, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Simon Bolivar Orchester, the Zurich, Munich, Basel and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestras , the Bamberg Symphony , the New Zealand and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. This under conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner , Esa-Pekka Salonen, Krzysztof Urbanski , Thomas Hengelbrock , Thomas Daugaard, Lahav Shani, Juraj Valcuha, Emmanuel Krivine , Sir Roger Norrington , Mario Venzago, Vladimir Fedossev, Vladimir Ashkenazy , Andrej Boreyko, Andrea Marcon and Giovanni Antonini .

Altstaedt gives concerts a. a. with the composers Thomas Adès , Jörg Widmann , Matthias Pintscher , Sofia Gubaidulina and Bryce Dessner and HK Gruber. In 2011 he played his double concerto in Budapest on the 85th birthday of the composer György Kurtág , and in 2012 the cello concerto Temptation on the 60th birthday of the composer Wolfgang Rihm . Further cello concertos by Sebastian Fagerlund and Helena Winkelman have been commissioned.

His regular recital and chamber music partners include Janine Jansen , Vilde Frang , Fazil Say , Alexander Lonquich , Pekka Kuusisto , Antoine Tamestit , Jonathan Cohen, Jean Rondeau and the Quatuor Ebene . He is a frequent guest at the Rheingau Music Festival and the Jerusalem Festival, the Proms, the Salzburg Mozart Week and the Summer Festival. He was one of the few European artists to be accepted into the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society New York.

Both his recordings of concerts by Joseph Haydn , Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , Mieczysław Weinberg and Dmitri Schostakowitsch as well as the world premiere recordings by Wilhelm Killmayer were received with enthusiasm by the specialist press worldwide. His recording of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's cello concerts won the BBC Music Magazine's 2017 Concerto Award.
