Antoine Tamestit

Antoine Tamestit (born July 11, 1979 in Paris ) is a French violist .

Antoine Tamestit, son of the violin teacher and composer Gérard Tamestit, received his first violin lessons from the age of five. At the age of nine he decided to learn the viola. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jean Sulem (* 1959), then he was a student of Jesse Levine at Yale University and the Tokyo String Quartet , before continuing his studies with Tabea Zimmermann in Berlin.

He has received numerous prizes in international competitions, such as first prize at the Concours international d'alto Maurice Vieux in 2000, first prizes at the Concours international William Primrose in 2001, at the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York in 2003 , and at the ARD International Music Competition in 2004 . At the BBC he received the New Generation Artist award for the 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 concert seasons. In 2007 he received the French award “Best Young Instrumental Soloist” of the year at the “Victoires de la musique classique”, and in 2008 he received the Bremen Music Festival Prize .

Since 2005, Antoine Tamestit has had numerous appearances with international orchestras in the concert metropolises, especially in Europe. From the 2009/10 season to 2011/12, Antoine Tamestit was an artist in the "Junge Wilde" series at the Dortmund Konzerthaus. He played the world premieres of several viola concerts, such as the Viola Concerto by Olga Neuwirth , and with Tabea Zimmermann the Double Concerto for Two Violas by Bruno Mantovani . Jörg Widmann composed a viola concerto for him, which was performed in 2015. Sofia Gubaidulina reorganized her viola concerto, composed in 1996, for Tamestit.

His concert partners include numerous other Tabea Zimmermann, the brothers Gautier and Renaud Capuçon , Gidon Kremer , Mischa Maisky and Jean-Guihen Queyras . Tamestit is a permanent member of the trio Zimmermann founded in 2007 by Frank Peter Zimmermann .

In October 2007 Antoine Tamestit was appointed professor for viola at the Cologne University of Music and Dance , where he worked until the 2013 summer semester. Since October 2013 he has been teaching at the Paris Conservatory .

Antoine Tamestit plays a viola by Étienne Vatelot (1925–2013) and since 2008 the so-called Mahler by Antonio Stradivari from 1672, which the Stradivari Foundation-Habisreutinger made available to him.
