Emmanuel Krivine

Emmanuel Krivine (born May 7, 1947 in Grenoble ) is a French conductor and violinist .

Life

Krivine's father was Russian , his mother Polish . He first studied violin with Louise Mercier in his hometown Grenoble . In 1960 he went to study at the Paris Conservatory ; there René Benedetti was his teacher. He began his career as a violinist at an early age at the age of 16. In 1963 he was awarded first prize in the violin category by the Paris Conservatory. As a scholarship holder of the “Chapelle Musicale de la Reine Elisabeth” in Brussels , he undertook further studies with Henryk Szeryng and Yehudi Menuhin in order to perfect himself in violin playing. In 1968 the Royal Conservatory of Brussels awarded him a prize for virtuosity; In 1968 he won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in the violin category. In the following years he was the winner of further violin competitions in Genoa , Naples , Pressburg and London .

From 1964 he also worked as a conductor , mainly in Belgium . In 1965 he met the conductor Karl Böhm , a crucial meeting for Krivine; then he devoted himself more and more to conducting.

In 1975 he conducted the New Year's Concert for the first time with the Nouvel Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France . From 1976 to 1983 he was a permanent guest conductor ( Principal Guest Conductor ) of this orchestra. From 1979 to 1981 he also taught orchestral conducting at the Lyon Conservatory . In 1981 he gave up playing the violin after a car accident and since then has worked exclusively as a conductor. From 1981 to 1983 he was director of the Orchester Philharmonique de Lorraine, now Orchester National de Lorraine . From 1983 to 1985 he was a permanent guest conductor ( Principal Guest Conductor ) of the Orchester National de Lyon . In 1987 he was appointed musical director and chief conductor of the orchestra. Krivine held this post until 2000. In 1988 he performed the Berlioz Requiem with John Aler (tenor) as part of the “ Festival Berlioz ” in Lyon , as well as the choir, the Philharmonie (Philharmonia de Lyon) and the Lyon Opera Orchestra. In 1989 Krivine conducted the world premiere of Michel Legrand's composition Concertoratorio , a commissioned work on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Revolution . In February 1992 he was the conductor of a concert performance of the Berlioz opera La damnation de Faust (in the leading roles: Gregory Kunde and José van Dam ) with the Orchester National de Lyon in Clermont-Ferrand as part of the cultural program of the 1992 Winter Olympics . In 1993 he was the conductor at the premiere of the composition Passagers by Michael Jarrell . In the summer of 1993 he conducted the Brahms Requiem with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (with Julia Varady and Håkan Hagegård as soloists) at the 3rd European Music Festival in Stuttgart .

From 2001 Krivine was a guest conductor of the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL). Since the 2006/2007 season he has been chief conductor and musical director of the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg. In May 2009 Krivine extended his contract with the OPL until the 2014/2015 season. Since the last concert as chief conductor of the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Krivine has conducted at the beginning of July 2015. Gustavo Gimeno will be his successor from the 2015/2016 concert season .

From the concert season 2015/2016 is Krivine principal guest conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra ( "Principal Guest Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra").

In 2004 Krivine founded the orchestra “La Chambre Philharmonique” together with musicians from all over Europe. Under Krivine's direction, the orchestra is dedicated to the discovery and interpretation of orchestral works of the Classical , Romantic and contemporary music periods, each performed with original instruments of the era. The formation's first appearance was in 2004 at the Folles Journées de Nantes music festival . With the orchestra “La Chambre Philharmonique”, CD recordings were made for the Naïve label, such as the C minor Mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Symphony No. 4 in A major (“Italian”) op. 90 and the Symphony no. 5 in D minor ( "Reformation Symphony") op. 107 of Mendelssohn .

Guest conductor

As a guest conductor, Krivine has conducted numerous renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam , the London Symphony Orchestra , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the Orchester Philharmonique de Nice , the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich , the orchestra the RAI in Turin and the Czech Philharmonic .

In North America , he conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra . He conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra .

In the 2010/11 season he has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe , the St. Petersburg Philharmonic , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt (Frankfurt RSO), the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC on . In 2012 he made a guest appearance with the orchestra formation “La Chambre Philharmonique” at the Beethovenfest Bonn .

Krivine works primarily as a concert conductor. Occasionally he also took over the direction of opera productions, including Die Fledermaus (Opéra de Lyon; December 2008) and Béatrice et Bénédict ( Opéra-Comique in Paris; February 2010).

The British daily The Guardian described Krivine in 2003 as one of the "greatest conductors of our time".

Audio documents

For the label “Timpani” Krivine records works of orchestral literature together with the OPL; Among other things, two CDs of the complete recording of Claude Debussy's orchestral works have already been released. The recordings were made in February 2009. Emmanuel Krivine has also released recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra , the Bamberg Symphony , the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Orchester National de Lyon. He has recorded works by Richard Strauss , Arnold Schönberg , Maurice Ravel , Hector Berlioz , Vincent d'Indy , Pierre-Octave Ferroud , Joseph Guy Ropartz and Pascal Dusapin on CD.
