The Concours Reine Elisabeth (Queen Elisabeth Competition, English Queen Elisabeth Competition ) in Brussels is one of the world's most important music competitions in the fields of violin since 1937, piano since 1938, singing since 1988 and for the first time from 2017 for cello . Only one of these categories is held each year; in addition, a composition competition has been held every odd year since 1991 .

history

The competition goes back to an idea of ​​the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe . When he died in 1931, the Belgian Queen Elisabeth took over the planning. In honor of her friend, she named him Concours Eugène Ysaÿe . David Oistrach and Emil Gilels won the first two competitions in 1937 and 1938. Due to the Second World War , the competition was only resumed in 1951. Since then it has been held under its current name. Queen Elizabeth remained until her death in 1965, the patron , it was followed by Queen Fabiola until 2013, since 2014, finally, the competition is under the patronage of Queen Mathilde held

For the 75th anniversary of the competition in 2012, Belgium issued a 2 euro commemorative coin on which the silhouette and monogram of Elisabeth Gabriele in Bavaria can be seen.
