Sergei Babayan

Sergei Babayan ( Armenian Սերգեյ Բաբայան * 1. January 1961 in Gyumri , Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a US-American - Armenian pianist.

biography

Babayan began his music education at the age of six with Luisa Markaryan and Georgy Saradjev. He studied with Lev Naumow and at the Moscow Conservatory with Vera Gornostajewa and Michail Pletnjow .

In 1989, when the political situation made it possible to travel abroad, Babayan went to the USA for the first time. He won first prizes at the major piano competitions Cleveland International Piano Competition , Hamamatsu International Piano Competition and Scottish International Piano Competition . This started his international career in the USA, Great Britain and Japan. He later became naturalized in the USA, but remains very attached to his Armenian roots.

He studied the music of Johann Sebastian Bach with Helmuth Rilling and also studied conducting.

Repertoire and collaborations

His repertoire primarily includes Mozart , Beethoven , Brahms and Schumann , as well as romantic composers such as Rachmaninoff and modern works by composers such as Witold Lutosławski , György Ligeti , Carl Vine and Arvo Pärt . He is also known for his interpretations of Bach's works.

Babayan has worked with conductors such as Valeri Gergijew , Juri Temirkanow , Neeme Järvi , Hans Graf , David Robertson , Tugan Sochijew , Joshua Weilerstein and Kazimierz Kord. With Gergijew he played at the International Festival Stars of the White Nights , the Moscow Easter Festival, the Barbican Center , the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg , the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory , the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris , the Salzburg Festival and at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orkest -Gergijew Festival, where Babayan was artist in residence .

He performs with well-known orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra , the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra , the Belgian National Orchestra, the Orchester National de Lille, the Orchester de la Suisse Romande , the Symphony Orchestra of Brescia & Bergamo, the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theaters, the Czech Philharmonic , the Warsaw Philharmonic , the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony.

His concerts took place in well-known halls such as the Herkulessaal in Munich , the Liederhalle in Stuttgart , the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg , the Konzerthaus in Berlin , the Brahms Hall in Karlsruhe , the Beethovenhalle in Bonn , the Philharmonie Essen , the Victoria Hall in Geneva , the Salle Gaveau in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, the Warsaw Philharmonic, Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Rudolfinum in Prague , Severance Hall in Cleveland , Carnegie Hall in New York and many others.

Babayan has made recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, EMC Records, Connoisseur Society, Discover Records and Pro Piano Records. His concerts have been broadcast by WQXR , WCLV, Radio France , Polskie Radio i Telewizja , BBC , NHK and medici.tv.

Teaching

In 1996 Babayan founded the Sergei Babayan International Piano Academy at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he is also Artist in Residence . His students include Grace Fong, now Director of Keyboard Studies at the Chapman University Conservatory, Mei-Hsuan Huang, Steinway Artist and Assistant Professor of Piano at Iowa State University , Ching-Yun Hu , winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition 2008 , Dmitri Levkovich, Stanislav Khristenko, winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition and winner of the fourth prize at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth 2013, and Daniil Trifonov , winner of the third prize at the 2010 International Chopin Competition , winner of the first prize of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition 2011 and the Tchaikovsky Competition 2011.

Recent concerts

In the 2014/2015 season, Babayan performed with Martha Argerich in Lugano , at the Verbier Festival in Verbier and at the Wigmore Hall in London . His performance of Prokofiev's 2nd and 5th Piano Concerts at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev received particular attention .

In the 2015/2016 season, Babayan performed with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and with the Camerata Israel in Tel Aviv . He gave concerts at the Progetto Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano , at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland and in Bad Kissingen . He gave recitals and duo concerts with Daniil Trifonow in the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg , returned to Wigmore Hall and gave recitals and chamber music in Los Angeles , East Lansing (Michigan) and Columbia (South Carolina), among others .

Highlights of the 2016/2017 season included recitals in Montreal , Vancouver , Lawrence, Kansas , St. Paul, Minnesota , Durham, North Carolina , Charleston, South Carolina, and Evanston, Illinois ; Duo recitals with Daniil Trifonov in Princeton (New Jersey) and Sarasota ; Chamber music appearances in Los Angeles and Fort Worth and the return to the Verbier Festival, where on July 24, 2017 he performed the Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major KV 503 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and on July 29, 2017 the Harpsichord Concerto No. 7 in g- Moll BWV 1058 (on the piano) by Johann Sebastian Bach played with the Verbier Festival Orchestra under Roberto González-Monjas .

In the 2017/18 season Babayan u. a. with his long-time duo partner Martha Argerich , with whom Babayan plays arrangements of ballet and theater music by Prokofiev for two pianos, in Germany and Switzerland.
