Life

Sochiev began taking piano lessons at the age of seven and conducted for the first time at 17. He was encouraged to do this by the conductor of the North Ossetian State Philharmonic Orchestra, Anatoli Briskin . He then studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Juri Chatujewitsch Temirkanow and Ilja Musin .

Sochijew conducted his first opera production outside Russia with La Bohème in 2001 in Iceland. The general director of the Welsh National Opera , Anthony Freud , appointed him in the same year as music director for a five-year period from 2003. In 2004 Sochiev resigned from his post at the Welsh National Opera. From 2005 he became a guest conductor at the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse (ONCT), where he was appointed music director in 2008.

From September 2012 to June 2016 Tugan Sochijew was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin (DSO Berlin) (after two seasons as Chief Conductor Designate). Sochijew had already stood at the podium of the Berlin orchestra for the first time in 2003 as part of the talent series “Debut in Deutschlandradio Kultur” and conducted it successfully several times in the following years. After Ingo Metzmacher retired as chief conductor, he was the orchestra's preferred candidate. Sochiev resigned the Berlin office in order to be able to devote more time to his duties in Moscow.

Since January 2014 he has been music director of the Bolshoi Theater and chief conductor of the local orchestra. He succeeded the Russian conductor Wassili Sinaiski , who had previously directed the musical fortunes of the house for three years. Among other things, he was responsible for the production of the opera Die Jungfrau von Orléans based on Friedrich Schiller , composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky , in September 2014 .

Sochiev also works regularly with the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and the London Philharmonia Orchestra . In addition, he is a sought-after guest conductor in leading opera houses and orchestras around the world. His debuts with the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic in 2009 and 2010 immediately led to re-invitations. In 2013 he made his debut with great success with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig .
