Daniil Olegowitsch Trifonow ( Russian Даниил Олегович Трифонов ; born March 5, 1991 in Nizhny Novgorod ; inter alia English / French transcription Daniil Trifonov ) is a Russian pianist and composer .
Life
Trifonow comes from a musical family. Both parents play the piano, the mother is a musicologist and teaches music theory, the father is a composer. At the age of five, Trifonov began playing the piano and composing. The parents recognized his talent and therefore moved to Moscow to give him the best possible education. From 2000 to 2009 he took classes at the prestigious Gnessin Institute . There he studied piano in Tatjana Selikman's class and, from 2006, composition . He then moved to the US Cleveland Institute of Music to continue his education from 2009 to 2011 under the care of the pianist Sergei Babayan .
He won several piano competitions and 3rd prize at the 2010 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw . He came into the public eye when he “won first prizes, gold medals and audience prizes in two international music competitions within six weeks” in 2011. At the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv in May 2011 he won first prize; At the international Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow in June 2011, in addition to the “gold medal in piano”, he was awarded the Grand Prix of the overall competition by jury chairman Valeri Gergiev .
Trifonow then gave concerts in his home country as well as in Austria , Canada , China , Germany , Italy , Israel , Japan , the Netherlands , Poland , Switzerland , Turkey , Great Britain and the USA . In 2013 Daniil Trifonov gave a highly regarded concert in New York's Carnegie Hall ; a concert recording was published in October 2013 under the name The Carnegie Recital by Deutsche Grammophon .
After his debut in Germany in May 2013 in the Berlin Philharmonic, the music critic Helmut Mauró called him “one of the most successful and incomprehensible piano talents of the last few decades” and attested him “an enormous awareness of what he did”. Norman Lebrecht stated: "[...] a pianist for the rest of our lives." Alfred Brendel and Martha Argerich are also among Trifonow's avowed admirers. Argerich was particularly impressed by the technical brilliance of his piano playing and added that his touch contained "tenderness and a demonic element" at the same time. You have "never heard anything like it". Trifonow received the ECHO Klassik as the best young artist back in 2014 . At the end of 2015 he was given the honor of performing with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst at the Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm. In December 2016 he made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle with the 3rd Piano Concerto by Rachmaninoff . The concert was broadcast on public television and in around “200 cinemas in 14 European countries”.
In addition to his work as a pianist, Trifonow also makes a name for himself as a composer. His five-movement suite Rachmaniana , which he composed while studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music, is part of his debut studio album Rachmaninov Variations , released in August 2015 .
On November 13, 2015, Trifonov was appointed to the Board of Directors of the New York Philharmonic . He lives in New York.
