John Lill

John Lill (born March 17, 1944 in the London Borough of Waltham Forest ) is an English pianist.

Life

Lill studied at the Royal College of Music and with Wilhelm Kempff . His talent showed up early, already at the age of nine he appeared in public. At the age of 18 he performed Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto under Sir Adrian Boult . This was followed by a celebrated debut in 1963 with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 at the Royal Festival Hall . In 1970 he won the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition . Lill made numerous recordings, including the entire piano concertos by Beethoven , Brahms and Rachmaninoff as well as all piano sonatas by Beethoven and Prokofiev .

Lill has played in more than fifty countries, both with recitals and as a concert soloist. He has worked in major European cities including Amsterdam , Berlin , Paris , Prague , Rome , Stockholm and Vienna , as well as in Russia, the Far East and Australasia (with several Australian Broadcasting Corporation tours). He has also performed in the United States with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra , New York City , Philadelphia , Dallas , Seattle , Baltimore , Boston , Washington, DC, and San Diego .

His repertoire includes more than seventy concerts, and he is particularly regarded as the leading interpreter of Beethoven, whose complete sonata cycle he has played on several occasions in England, the USA and Japan. In England he has participated in more than 30 proms and performs regularly with the major symphony orchestras. He has traveled with the London Symphony , the London Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the City of Birmingham, the Hallé Orchestra , the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra .

Lill recorded for Deutsche Grammophon , EMI (the entire Beethoven piano concertos with RSNO and Gibson) and ASV (both Brahms concerts with Hallé and Loughran) as well as the entire Beethoven sonatas and Tchaikovsky I with the LSO and Judd. He recently recorded the entire Prokofiev sonatas for ASV Records. His more recent recordings of the entire Beethoven bagatelles and piano concertos with the CBSO and Weller are available from Chandos Records. With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Vernon Handley he recorded Malcolm Arnold's Fantasy on a Theme of John Field (dedicated to John Lill) for Conifer. He also made recordings of all Rachmaninoff concerts and his most important solo pieces for piano for Nimbus Records. The latest recordings are piano works by Schumann for Pleasure Label for his 60th birthday and new publications by Signum by Schumann, Brahms and Haydn.

In 2000 he was injured in both hands in an attempted robbery. However, the injuries to the tendons were not severe. Lill soon recovered and was able to continue his career. He lives in London.
