Denis Leonidowitsch Mazujew , also: Denis Matsuev ( Russian Дени́с Леони́дович Мацу́ев , born June 11, 1975 in Irkutsk ) is a Russian pianist .

Mazujew was born in the Siberian city ​​of Irkutsk into a family of musicians. He received his first piano lessons at the age of four. In 1991 he moved to Moscow with his parents and began musical training at the Moscow Conservatory . In 1998 Mazujew won the Tchaikovsky Competition in the piano category.

Mazujew is considered one of the most important Russian pianists, and his interpretations of the works of Sergei Rachmaninoff are particularly popular . He is Artistic Director of the Stars of Baikal Festival in Irkutsk and the Moscow Crescendo Festival. Mazuiev was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia . In May 2013 he performed at the inauguration of the new Mariinsky Theater building in Saint Petersburg . He played at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . His international appearances also include concerts in Germany such as B. in the Frankfurt Old Opera .

Mazujew is married to Ekaterina Schipulina, a solo dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet , and has a daughter (* October 2016 ).

Denis Mazujew advocates the promotion of music for children and young people and the development of cultural projects in many regions of the Russian Federation .

Since February 2006 he has been a member of the Council for Art and Culture of the President of the Russian Federation .

Since 2008 Mazujew has chaired the "New Names" foundation, of which he himself received a grant in the 1990s. The foundation has set up a system for promoting talented students . “All over Russia, including in small towns and villages, we are collecting talent. Our 'family' has already trained more than 20,000 young talented children. All of them have the potential to help the glorious Russian music houses to even more fame, ”emphasized Mazujew at the press conference in December 2019 in Berlin .

In December 2011 Mazujew received an honorary professorship from Lomonosov Moscow State University .

In his capacity as artistic director of the Sergei Rachmaninov Foundation, he has been campaigning for the acquisition of the composer's former villa ( Villa Rachmaninow or "Senar") in the Swiss community of Weggis ( Canton Lucerne ) since 2013 .

Mazujew has been a UNESCO special envoy since 2014 .
