• White Island / New Zealand : According to current information, 16 people died when the Whakaari volcano erupted. In addition, two people are missing and several people are injured, some seriously.

• Punta Arenas / Chile : A cargo plane belonging to the Chilean Air Force has gone missing on the way to a base in the Antarctic. There are 38 people on board the machine, including 17 crew members and 21 passengers.
• Helsinki / Finland : Following the resignation of Antti Rinne , Sanna Marin is elected as the new Prime Minister . At 34, she is currently the youngest head of government in the world.

• Berlin / Germany : Another unsuccessful ballot for Vice President of the Bundestag : Paul Podolay fails in his third ballot, making him the fourth AfD candidate who failed in three ballots each.
• Zhengzhou / People's Republic of China : Start of the World Tour Grand Finals in table tennis
• London / United Kingdom : In the early general election , the Labor Party overturns its worst election result since 1935, and the Conservative Party wins an absolute majority in the House of Commons .

She would have overtaken the previous record holder Helmut Kohl if she had stayed in office until December 18, 2021. Merkel's next record would already be due on September 10, 2020: At the age of 23, the former minister for women and the environment would have been a member of the federal cabinet longer than the previous record holder Hans-Dietrich Genscher .

• Riyadh / Saudi Arabia : In the case of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi , five accused are sentenced to death. Three others received prison sentences. Two senior officials of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman were acquitted of the allegations.
• Chicago / United States : Boeing boss Dennis Muilenburg resigns from his position as CEO due to the 737 MAX crisis . He will be succeeded by David Calhoun .

• Almaty / Kazakhstan : Bek-Air flight 2100 crashes shortly after take-off at Almaty airport. According to initial findings, there were around 100 passengers on board, 12 did not survive the crash.
