- Lima / Peru : The Peruvian Vice President Mercedes Aráoz resigns. The day before, she had been appointed transitional president by the dissolved parliament. She also withdraws from this.
- Beijing / China : On the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China , the government is holding the largest military parade in its history
- San Marino : For the 19th time, a woman becomes head of government in San Marino: Mariella Mularoni takes on the six-month office of Capitano Reggente alongside her colleague Luca Boschi . This makes San Marino by far the country with the most women heads of government in its history: Since 1981, 17 women have headed the state in a quarter of that time.
- Washington, DC / USA : Kristalina Georgiewa takes up her position as IMF Director.
- Vienna / Austria : The FPÖ suspends the membership of its former chairman Heinz-Christian Strache .

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to the US cell researchers William G. Kaelin and Gregg L. Semenza and their British colleague Peter J. Ratcliffe .
- Twistan Valley / Germany : The meat processor Wilke Waldecker Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH & Co. KG gets caught in a meat scandal and as a result has to file for bankruptcy.
- Utrecht / Netherlands : Former Dutch building minister Ella Vogelaar (2007–2008) kills herself.

- Nuremberg / Germany : The IG Metall chairman Jörg Hofmann is re-elected at the trade union day .
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Canadian-American cosmologist James Peebles and the Swiss astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz are awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for “the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a star similar to the sun ” .

- Quito / Ecuador : Ecuador is paralyzed by a general strike.
- Rojava / Syria : Beginning of the Turkish military offensive against the democratic forces of Syria .
- Stockholm / Sweden : For the development of lithium-ion batteries is John B. Goodenough , M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded.

- Brussels / Belgium : The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy of the European Parliament rejects Sylvie Goulard as a candidate for the new EU Commission von der Leyen .
- Bucharest / Romania : The Dăncilă cabinet is voted out of parliament by a vote of no confidence. Until a new government takes office, Viorica Dăncilă continues to run the business on a provisional basis.
- Havana / Cuba : The President of the State Council, Miguel Díaz-Canel , who has been in office since 2018, will be re-elected as head of state, who will no longer be called the President of the State Council under the new constitution.
- Mons / Belgium : The University of Mons is characterized Greta Thunberg with the honorary doctorate from.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize for Literature 2019 is awarded to the Austrian writer Peter Handke . The 2018 award will be given retrospectively to Olga Tokarczuk from Poland .

- Oslo / Norway : In particular for his policy of reconciliation with its neighbor Eritrea is the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded.
- Potsdam / Germany : Awarding of the Prix Europa
- Vienna / Austria : The Japanese Seiichi Furuya , who lives in Graz , is awarded the State Prize for Artistic Photography .

- Dresden / Germany : The Saxon regional bishop Carsten Rentzing resigns because of an earlier published right-wing extremist text.
- Vienna / Austria : The Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge is the first runner to complete the marathon route in under two hours. Due to the lack of competition conditions, his performance is not recognized as a world record .

- London / United Kingdom : The English Queen Elizabeth II opens the new British parliamentary term.
- Madrid / Spain : In the criminal proceedings following the Catalonia crisis since 2017 , nine Catalan politicians have been sentenced to long prison terms: former Vice Prime Minister Oriol Junqueras to 13 years; Ex-Labor Minister Dolors Bassa , Ex-Foreign Minister Raül Romeva , Jordi Sànchez and former government spokesman Jordi Turull for 12 years; Ex-Parliamentary President Carme Forcadell for eleven and a half years; Ex-Interior Minister Joaquim Forn as well as the former Sustainability Minister Josep Rull for ten and a half years and Jordi Cuixart for 9 years imprisonment. Ex-building minister Meritxell Borràs , ex-justice minister Carles Mundó and ex-culture minister Santi Vila receive fines.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize for Economics goes to Abhijit Banerjee , his wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer . Duflo is only the second woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Economics.

- Jalalabad / Afghanistan : At least 62 people are killed and dozens more injured in an attack during Friday prayers on a mosque in the Haska Mina district of Nangarhar province .
- Munich / Germany : CSU boss Markus Söder is re-elected at the party conference.
- Santiago / Chile : Riots over fare increases at the Metro de Santiago . Operations had to be discontinued across the board.

- London / United Kingdom : The British House of Commons votes in a special session against an immediate approval of the new Brexit treaty. This brings the Benn Act into force, forcing Prime Minister Boris Johnson to request an extension of the Brexit deadline in Brussels.

- Belfast / Northern Ireland : Because the Northern Irish Parliament can neither agree on its own government nor on changes to a resolution passed in July by the British House of Commons in July that exempts same-sex marriages and abortions in Northern Ireland from punishment, this resolution takes effect at the beginning of the day in force.

- Germany : Ulf Kämper ( SPD ) is confirmed in their office as Lord Mayor in Kiel and Bernd Wiegand (independent) in Halle an der Saale . In the first round of mayor elections in Hanover, the SPD candidate will be eliminated, so for the first time since 1946 there will be no SPD mayor in the Lower Saxony capital. The election of the mayor also takes place in Mainz ; as in Hanover, a second ballot is required on November 10th .
