- Krefeld / Germany : The ape tropical house in the Krefeld zoo burns down completely. At least 30 animals perish, only two chimpanzees survive the accident.
- Vienna / Austria : The New Years Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic will be conducted for the first time by Andris Nelsons .
- Vienna / Austria : Merging of the existing 21 into five social insurance carriers. The nine regional health insurance funds are merged to form the Austrian Health Insurance Fund , the Public Employees Insurance Company (BVA) and the Insurance Company for Railways and Mining (VAEB) to become the Insurance Company for Public Employees, Railways and Mining (BVAEB), the Farmers Social Insurance Institution (SVB) and the Commercial Social Insurance Agency Economy (SVA) to the social insurance institution for the self-employed (SVS).
- Vienna / Austria : Sabine Seidler takes up her post as President of the Austrian University Conference.
- Brussels / Belgium : Croatia takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union .

- Hamburg / Germany : The Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Center (JACDEC) publishes its annual ranking on flight safety . According to this index, Emirates was the safest airline in 2019 with a value of 95.48 (out of 100). The safest German airline was Eurowings in 24th place (90.61).
- London / United Kingdom : The Scot Peter Wright defeats the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen 7: 3 in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2020 and wins his first world title .
- Switzerland : In Switzerland, the trout was named Fish of the Year 2020 .
- Oberstdorf / Germany : German Figure Skating Championships (January 2-3)
- Vienna / Austria : Agreement on coalition between ÖVP and Greens
Friday 3rd January 2020
- Baghdad / Iraq : By air raid of the US Army is Iranian General Qassem Soleimani killed. The United States suspects that he was involved in the uprisings outside the US embassy in Baghdad. After the killing of the Iranian general Kassem Soleimani , the Bundeswehr suspends training in Iraq due to the risk of escalation.

- Ahvas / Iran : Beginning of the funeral services for General Kassem Soleimani who were killed
- Baghdad / Iraq : The Iraqi parliament votes in a special session for the deportation of US troops.
- Beverly Hills / United States : The Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel is hosting the 77th Golden Globes ceremony, hosted for the fifth time by Ricky Gervais . Tom Hanks is with the Cecil B. DeMille Award honored for his life's work, Ellen DeGeneres receives the Carol Burnett Award .
- Caracas / Venezuela : The National Assembly of Venezuela confirms by a majority Juan Guaidó as President of Parliament and thus as interim head of state. However, the government denies the opposition majority access to the parliament building. In the building, Luis Parra proclaims himself as anti-parliamentary speaker.
- Croatia : runoff election for head of state
- Tehran / Iran : The Iranian government has announced that it will no longer adhere to the 2015 nuclear agreement after Soleimani has been killed and that it will enrich uranium indefinitely in the future.
- Zagreb / Croatia : The social democrat Zoran Milanovic wins with 52.7% in the runoff election of the presidential election against the incumbent President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : Completion of the Four Hills Tournament 2019/20 , winner is the Pole Dawid Kubacki
Tuesday 7th January 2020
- Brussels / Belgium : NATO is withdrawing some of its troops from Iraq, including armed forces .
- Caracas / Venezuela : The opposition MPs enter the building of the National Assembly of Venezuela in a tumultuous manner and swear in their elected Juan Guaidó as parliamentary president.
- Kerman / Iran : Over 56 people die in a mass panic during a funeral procession for the killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani
- Madrid / Spain : Pedro Sánchez is elected Prime Minister of the country . 167 of the 350 MPs voted for him (165 against, 18 abstentions).
- Vienna / Austria : For the first time in Austria an ÖVP-Greens coalition government has been sworn in with the Federal Government Kurz II under Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz .
- Vienna / Austria : Barbara Stelzl-Marx is named Austrian Scientist of the Year 2019 by the Club of Education and Science Journalists .
Wednesday January 8, 2020
- Al Asad Airbase and Erbil Airport / Iraq : The Iranian government, under the personal command of Mullah leader Ali Chamenei , is attacking US forces in Iraq at the Al Asad air base and the Erbil airport air base. The Iranian government is also threatening the destruction of Haifa in Israel.
- Baghdad / Iraq : Katyusha rockets hit again in the green zone . One bullet misses the US embassy by only 100 meters. The missiles set fire to the city. The attack came from the south of the city. The authorities assume an attack by militias loyal to Iran.
- Tehran / Iran : Crash of a Boeing 737-800 on Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 shortly after take-off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport . All 167 passengers and 9 crew members were killed. The Iranian authorities initially spoke of a technical defect. But three days after the crash, on January 11th, they then admitted to being shot down. Iran speaks of "human error".

- Washington, DC / United States : After Iranian attacks on a US base in Iraq , new economic sanctions are imposed on Iran .
Saturday 11th January 2020
- Paris / France : After long protests, the French government made concessions to the unions in the conflict over pension reform. For example, raising the standard retirement age to 64 is temporarily abandoned.
- Taipei / Republic of China (Taiwan) : The China-critical President Tsai Ing-wen is re-elected with 57% of the vote.
- Tehran / Iran : The regime's leadership confesses to the accidental shooting down of the Ukrainian passenger plane PS752 on the way from Tehran to Kiev ( Ukraine ), as it was believed to be an American cruise missile .
- Tehran / Iran : In the capital of Iran, protests broke out after the announcement that flight PS752 had been shot down . The demonstrators are demanding that the head of state Ayatollah Ali Khamenei resign . The demonstration was broken up by the police after a while.
- Tehran / Iran : The British ambassador Rob Macaire was arrested by the police for a few hours. The British government is outraged by this "egregious violation of international law".
- Belfast / Northern Ireland : After a three-year hiatus, the Northern Ireland Assembly , the Northern Ireland Assembly , resumes work, elects a new Speaker of Parliament and appoints a new government.
